Frederick Roemer wealthy Orange businessman was found murdered in his Park hotel room. His head battered, evidence shows he fought to defend life. Robbery followed with ring watch and $100 taken, no sign of the killer or accomplices. room searched for letters and papers.
Motorman Augustus Batteral testifies the crew of a work car left a switch open at Acton on the Indianapolis and Cincinnati interurban line. Donald Sleeth of Shelbyville died in the wreck, with several injured. Batteral says he could not stop in time. witnesses include telegraph operator H Wagner and Dr J W Spencer who noticed the open switch and car speed. Coroner’s inquest continues with multiple Acton residents testifying.
In Allentown Pennsylvania today an infant's cries alerted a boarder who rescued eight residents from a coal gas fire. The infant's father Nicholas Contravo and his son Joseph died from the gas exposure. The upstairs tragedy left two fatalities and a heroic rescue by the baby and boarder, ending a deadly blaze.
The Indianapolis Sun reports that Bryan leads a large Nebraska committee backing Denver for the Democratic national convention, with Denver pledging 100000 dollars and Senator Guggenheim contributing 235 dollars. Bryan expresses pleasure at Denver as the convention site, saying any location between Boston and San Francisco would suit him.
Port Wayne Ind December Fort Wayne News editor Clarence F Bicknell was assaulted by saloon keeper August Jackson who entered his private office with two men. Bicknell dodged a rear blow turned and struck back, then grappled Jackson as a clerk Elsie Shoemaker intervened by smashing one assailant with a chair, forcing the escape of Jackson who fled leaving his hat.
George Rennick of 16 S Capitol Ave reported Thomas Cameron, a roomer, carrying a dress suitcase and two or three hats. Detectives Kinney and Morgan identified the items as taken from J F Donavan on N Arsenal Ave, waited, then arrested Cameron.
Daniel Foley of American Construction presented a $100 claim at the Board of Park Commissioners meeting for gravel hauled to Riverside park years ago. Fred McClellan, assistant engineer of city parks, was appointed to investigate the claim.
In Chicago on December 13 three unidentified laborers were found dead in a Greek hotel at 433 Halsted Street. A gas jet in the room was found open and the proprietor says the men appeared intoxicated when shown to the room.
Washington December 13 It is now practically certain that Representative James T Lloyd of Missouri will be elected to succeed Representative James M Grigis of Georgia as chairman of the Democratic national congressional committee.
Richard E. Waiton was hanged today in Chicago for the murder of Mrs. Lillian Grant. The execution concluded the Spec. 13 case as reported by the local press.
William Gadd known as "Jack the Smearer" stood trial in regular court after confessing to detectives Kinney and Bray that he ruined dresses of Indianapolis women by smearing them with filth. He was fined 500 dollars and sentenced to 180 days in the workhouse, an appeal and insanity plea following. His wife and child were present. Gadd has painted water color landscapes during confinement, which an attendant will display as evidence.
Cafit Quigley and Sergt Weaver of the police department have been detailed by Acting Police Chief Martin Hyland to fight the blocking of streetcars at the Belt railroad and E Wasa.
Wash Cheatem and other colored property owners opposed paving an alley south of Thirteenth street between Missouri street and the canal at a Board of Public Works meeting. Cheatem threatened to seek a legislative appeal, but the board approved the improvement despite objections.

Vanderbilt is cited as being present at dinners in London with Miss Schenck and Wilson.

Mrs George Hitt of 91 North Meridian Street was burned Friday while cleaning a muff and feather boa. A one story stable at 31 EL Ninth street in New York burned killing one man, mortally injuring another, and badly burning a woman. Fire chief Croker blamed police neglect and post ignorance for the severity. The blaze also damaged a three story rear building owned by Robert Dwyer, with occupants Mrs Dwyer and stableman William Siegel perishing.
