A Rome dispatch reports an anarchist, identity undisclosed by police, was captured in the Vatican gardens with a revolver and dagger. He admitted intent to assassinate the pope, calling Leo a spiritual giant. The pope narrowly escaped while being moved in his chair to the pavilion. Italian authorities took charge of the prisoner amid secrecy.
The street railway company orders 15 new large cars built in Cincinnati for Indianapolis winter service. They will be as large as current cars, sturdier and more ornate, with no final placement decided. Colleges and E Tenth Street lines are expected to receive some. Completion is timed for this winter.
Vice-president Jones of the Indianapolis street railway company says five guards are stationed at Fairview park to protect the public after the Dungaloo gang disturbance Sunday night. He notes private guards cannot match city police and that regular police will be called if trouble recurs.
Charles Zimmerman of Ohio acting for Heuck's opera house company paid the required fee on $40,000 capital stock represented in the Empire theater of Indianapolis. The company’s total stock is $206,000.
W. H. Hart the state auditor will present a paper before the Western underwriters association in Chicago on September 26 and will read another paper to the insurance commissioners' convention the day before.

A prisoner in police court faced a drunkenness charge on Monday. He attempted two hangings with a bed chain, but fellow inmates and a turnkey intervened each time.
A beautiful new Rhodes Burford furniture company store at 127 129 N West Washington Street in Indianapolis opened with an extensive display. The 48 store chain plans rapid expansion, emphasizes low prices with quality, and features Buck line products, a showroom staff from executives, music, and free carnation flower pictures for visitors.
The oldest inhabitants recall a major hailstorm in Indianapolis on Monday noon. Stones ranged from pea to marble with a one inch long largest piece on a Majestic balcony. The six minute storm from the north moved south, caused minor damage to fruit and trees, unsettled horses, then dissipated as sun returned.
Samuel Harmon of Brazil appeals to the supreme court after being sentenced to life for shooting Charley Marsal Reynolds with a shotgun during a nighttime attack by a crowd. Harmon says he fired to frighten not to hit, and notes his past as a contractor builder and Civil War veteran who suffered hearing injury from a shell explosion.
Peter S. McNally, famed long distance swimmer, plans to swim from Boston to New York starting near Charlestown bridge around 1 p.m. next Sunday. He aims to cover about 282 1/2 nautical miles, hoping to reach The Battery before noon on September 30, with a steam yacht and two trusted helpers in a mail boat at hand.

The Dawson couple, Sami C. Dawson and his former wife Bessie Blackwell, face renewed police court scrutiny with Dawson charged by police for assault and battery after a domestic incident at their Elm Street home. Screams, broken glass, and a disturbed scene preceded Mrs. Dawson’s detention for disturbing the peace.
Sunday drew 576 admissions to the monument with 475 using the elevator and 101 walking up. Receipts reached $128, unusually high for a non special attraction in Indianapolis, second only to a pre Spanish American War Sunday when Indiana regiments departed.

Four boys drowned off Long Branch New Jersey after being swept away by heavy waves while swimming away from shore. The victims include two sons of Professor Blakely head of Long Branch high school, and sons of Alex Garker and Sherman.
The governor has given W. A. Hinshaw, sentenced to the Michigan City penitentiary for murdering his wife, a ten days leave to visit his parents in Randolph county. Both parents are said to be near death, and a guard accompanied Hinshaw to his old home last Friday night. Ex Senator Macy of Winchester and Secretary of State were instrumental in securing the leave.
Mary E S Snyder of 728 N Missouri St lies at Deaconess Hospital badly scalded after a 11 50 am accident at the W B Huffman canning factory at Big Four and St Clair. Officials say a leak in a water box heated to 160 degrees caused the injuries. Huffman denies a boiler explosion and forbids entry for reporters or worker statements. Another unnamed woman was injured.
The grand jury starts its August term without special instructions and a jail prisoner report is expected this week. Circuit and superior courts likely resume around Sept. 16 after late vacations. The circuit court will immediately hear the contempt case against Wm. H. Schmidt for refusal to testify in the accounting suit filed by Ramus F. Stewart alleging Schmidt owed the county large sums.
Ira Beard, a young boy, sought shelter under the Hendrick's monument in the state house yard during a noon storm on Monday. Lightning struck the monument and communicated to the boy, who was taken home in a dazed condition with no feeling in his lower limbs. He is expected to recover.
The mayor signed three ordinances including a $40,000 temporary loan and an $11,000 appropriation. The measures also authorize the board to transfer $4,000 of funds to buy equipment for the fire department.
The county commissioners awarded the Big Run bridge substructure contract to Samuel Robbins for $1,650 and the superstructure contract to the New Castle Bridge Company for $1,060.
Levi Springer and Wm Stamm and Fred Coleman faced Judge Daly Monday on a charge of stealing corn from box cars in Haughville. The defendants denied the accusation as the case proceeded.

Charles A. Bookwalter Republican mayoralty nominee returns from Chicago Monday night and may issue acceptance Tuesday. The GOP plans an opening and vigorous campaign next week with a block manager system assigning responsible Republicans to each block to monitor residents and report conditions. Democrats wrangle over nominations as organization work proceeds quietly.
