Weyler arrives in Havana by sea while Gen. Gomez closes in, sparking alarm as Spaniards taunt Gen. Lee and fears rise for American safety. Reports note a new dynamite gun expedition departing New York with a small crew heading toward the Jersey coast to load arms.
At about 9 p.m. Thursday, Mayor Taggart, amid city uproar over his nomination, visited Navin's Pharmacy. Navin and Taggart exchanged a firm handshake, signaling a reunification of Democratic factions as Navin suggested Taggart would be the next mayor and implied the hatchet was buried.

Mayor Taggart ordered higher fines up to 35 per case. McCarthy claims he removes only contractually required waste and disputes portions he calls outside the contract.
The fourth day of the Knights and Daughters of Tabor convention opened at the court house with Rufus R. Dodson presiding. Rev. Moses Dickson led a special conference on placing Indiana into a district temple by itself. Indiana officers were appointed by B. Farrell. The first district session will be at Mt. Vernon on the first Tuesday in August 1898. Illinois district officers to be elected Friday afternoon. banquet Friday night. convention closes Saturday morning.

The association decided about 1000 dollars for improvements including an artesian well, gas engine, lake pumping, dam, bridges, bath houses, and a five dollar assessment per tent owner. New officers elected include President J W Dashiell Greensburg and Treasurer George Hodell Shelbyville.

The body of a 17 year old boy identified as Thomas Walson of Lord Street was found after a train accident west of town. He died in Crawfordsville hospital early Thursday morning while on his way home from visiting a relative. The boy’s mother believes he was returning home when he was struck by the wheels, an accidental death considered by authorities.
