Promoters of the L A W meet express anger at railroads for lower than expected turnout. Officials note Republican convention crowds were double. A national encampment offer at one cent per mile outshines the meet’s prior half-fare. Newby oval to host races despite air of railroad opposition.
A vast crowd converged on the state house Tuesday night for a reception hosted by the L. A. W. dignitaries. Officials and notable figures moved through marble halls as bands played and lights illuminated the scene. About 15,000 attendees were guided by eight police, with governors and civic leaders greeting guests including Mayor Taggart.
Five of the Fourth Ohio volunteers were wounded five miles beyond Guayamo as they reconnoitered toward Cayey. The Americans fought in a shallow ditch and used dynamite guns, driving Spaniards from a blockhouse. Reinforcements and the guns succeeded in driving the enemy into retreat.
Five negroes are hanged near a railroad in Clarendon following the assassination of wealthy merchant John T. Orr. Orr's widow died in her cell from poison while the wife and four others were lynched. Miss Morris, implicated, disappeared. The mob acted orderly.
Maj. William F. Hinkle formerly of Fort Wayne and a private in the Forty fourth Indiana now commanded a college battalion at Gettysburg and has been nominated for Congress by Republicans in Tennessee's district 8.
Edward T. Hunter and Verda H. Mish, believed to have eloped, married Tuesday afternoon in Summitville after trouble locating a minister. Rev. Allan B. Philpott performed the ceremony.

Annie Marble and Mamie Carter ran a street coin grab on Howard Street near West St. They targeted Joseph Salvati, a traveling banana salesman, and after a pickpocketing ruse a dime dropped from his pocket. Anna bought beer with the coin totaling 1.10 dollars and was fined. Acting judge Hamrick suspended judgment on Annie's appeal.
