Chicago reports a day of higher grain prices led by wheat with gains from 1% to 24 cents. Corn, oats, and provisions also advanced while opening and closing prices show May contracts for wheat at 1.21 and corn around 11 to 11 per bushel.
Ivina Ky April 27 The murder trial of Beach Hargis for killing his son nears a verdict with the jury expected by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. Witness Miss Mary Coffee, former bookkeeper for Hargis, testified this morning that no argument or struggle occurred before the shooting and contradicted the defendant while corroborating other eyewitnesses.
Congressman John A. M. Adair of Indiana's eighth district visited Indianapolis for a short time Tuesday. He has spent days in his district during tariff debates and will return next week. Adair, a Democrat now in his second term, has led the district to consistent Democratic leads and was considered for the gubernatorial nomination last year.
Mrs Jesse Livermore wife of a Wall Street trader will testify in the Chester S Jordan murder case in Indianapolis. She mortgaged her property to fund his defense and plans to stand by him despite notoriety.
In Flushing Queens on April 27 Claudia Hains wife of Capt Peter Hains awaits Prosecutor Dewitts call as the Bayside Yacht Club murder case enters its seventh day. Prosecutor Dewitt expects to present corpus delicti first and then witnesses to prove Capt Hains shot William E Annis on August 15.
Rev. W. E. McCarty, assigned to Oklahoma months ago, is in Portland. He has helped establish three churches, with Quana’s completed church debt free, Loveland’s church starting with a donated parsonage, and plans for churches at Hollister and Fairview.

In James and Robert Baughman’s cell deputies found three saws and a ready handle saw, hinting at outside smuggling to aid escape. Mrs. Blanche Myerly told police she was beaten by her husband A. V. Myerly near the Imperial hotel where he runs the Turkish bath. Effie Cole, who lived on W Ohio Street, was also charged. Myerly fined 10 dollars and costs. Miss Cole fined 1 dollar and costs for assault and battery.
Washington April 27 Former Representative Joseph W Babcock of Wisconsin died at his home at 9 6 a m He served 14 years in the lower house and was longtime chairman of the national Republican congressional committee His age is given as 11 years old in error and the report notes his long service and leadership within the party.
Lester Gibbons eight years old, son of Charles Gibbons, 1016 Division Street, has vanished from home since Monday afternoon after leaving for school. Police asked to intensify search. He had not spoken of leaving and appeared content at home.
The will of ex Senator David Turpie who died last week was probated on Tuesday. Dated October 29 1906 the brief document in Turpies hand names his daughter Mary Turpie as executrix and leaves real estate and personal property valued at about 50000 dollars. The witnesses were Aquilla O Jones and Alexander C Ayres. In addition to the N Meridian street home the estate includes property in Monticello.
The Indianapolis Police Captain Asche held an inquiry at central station and found George Childs a chauffeur for Albert Lieber of Indianapolis Brewing not guilty of violating the speed law. The evidence suggested Long, a new driver, was unfamiliar with the rules.
The state of Indiana challenges William M. Pence a New Castle druggist who refused to hand over grand jury applications for liquor. Pence argues the documents are incriminating but public property. The case tests the future of the blind tiger law as Pence was indicted for illegal selling of liquor after the appeals court ruling.
For the first time in 18 years the doors of the Haynes restaurant on N Pennsylvania Street will be locked Tuesday night. Proprietor Haynes will close the restaurant at 8 30 every night, making it one of the citys most popular eating places unavailable after that hour.
Charles Johnson, a Negro, was sent to the grand jury from police court Tuesday on a charge of stealing a purse containing 68 from Joseph Lane, a Negro saloon keeper, 190 Yandes street.
Pittsburgh April 27. Carnegie Steel Company increased prices by one dollar per ton on bars plates and shapes due to strong sales during the past month.
Indianapolis health officer Dr. Eugene Buehler warned that the city’s 20 000 shallow wells and 2000 privy vaults threaten public health as density grows and ground pollution increases. He urged house to house canvassing to close hundreds more wells and favored municipal water to lower costs. A well under 100 feet is dangerous.
Martha J. Winston, 68, three marriages, was granted an absolute divorce in superior court No. 2. She testified that her husband used a blank deed to transfer Woodruff Place property and obtain loans, while posing as someone named Wineberg and claiming to be 40. He allegedly squandered thousands within three months.
