Indictments against Citizens' street railway leaders Mason and Superintendent Elliott led to their arrest and bail as Indianapolis riders pay three cents for trips. Officers read warrants, bonds were posted, and conductors continued accepting the new fare amid court actions.
A street car law has been upheld in at least one court in the state. The ruling reflects police court enforcement of the new regulation. The decision signals continued legal support for the statute within local judicial action.
Day morning H Robbins Charles Venable and Charles Phelps street car conductors were fined 50 pounds each plus costs in police court for collecting more than three cents fare. The company agreed to a joint outcome to avoid further trials, proposing motions to quash affidavits and a not guilty plea with a nominal finding. The assault case against Robbing by Tedor Fuller was dismissed as Fuller boarded the car to be ejected.
A Wabash train from Chicago derailed near the Fads bridge on the east approach. The engine left the track and the cowcatcher punched through the iron barriers into the river. Memphis report April 17 says the Biggs levee at Delta La broke at 10 PM, widening rapidly and sending crowds fleeing to high ground as telegraph warnings spread. About 400 Negroes rescued near Davis Island, with widespread flooding and looting of crops and homes along the levee system.
CHICAGO April 17. University of Illinois graduates in Chicago plan to arrest Charles W. Spalding, president of the Globe Savings Bank and former IL treasurer, for embezzlement. A complaint will be filed in circuit court and a warrant sought, but Judge Tuley declined to act while receiver proceedings are pending. More efforts will follow.
At a Friday school board session Commissioner Hendrickson pressed for explanations on alleged corporal punishment in schools. Superintendent Goss noted fluctuations in cases, while speakers recounted incidents including a student whipped to bleeding feet and other punishments. The board considered investigations, branch library criticims, and building naming plans amid heightened concern for student health and discipline.
Athens reports another battle near Nezero where Greek forces repelled Turkish attempts to seize abandoned positions. Greek troops pressed forward under heavy fire, driving the Turkish force from several stations. News cites negotiations with King George for a settlement as Albanians rush to Verona and Turkish warships shelled insurgents near Canea.
Mrs. Veronia Tone is under arrest for assault and battery on her daughter Melie Logan. The girl, bruised with whip marks, was taken to City hospital. In criminal court Friday Judge Mc Cray sustained a motion to quash the affidavits against Frank G. Darlington of the Pennsylvania railroad charging him with unlawfully discharging employees and hindering their search for new work. The state was given 60 days to file papers of exception. affidavits on file since the railroad strikes of 1894.
Frank Lee of Carter and Lee was trapped beneath a log while unloading logs at West Washington Street and the Bell railroad on Friday morning. His knee was badly mashed and he was carried to his home at 200 Park Avenue where Dr. Oliver treated his injuries.

Chas W Greater a Knox County leader and prominent Democrat and Mason died Friday night in Vincennes. Born in Alsace Germany he came to Vincennes in 1834 and left an estate valued at about 1 million dollars.
