A surge in court cases tied to a crime wave was attributed to natural conditions rather than new criminal activity. Officials reported weather-related factors influenced incident rates and courtroom backlogs, prompting procedural adjustments.
Senate Finance Committee proposes broad tariff reductions with many items moved to the free list. Aldrich announces plans to take up the tariff Thursday as the House recalls the bill for a corrected free crude petroleum listing. Changes emphasize lower overall rates, with selective restorations and edits across schedules A to D.
In the saloon at Senate avenue and North street an argument led to Robert Turner firing at John Brown. The bullet shattered a window and struck William Griffin, age 74, as he passed by. Brown and Turner were arrested. Brown reportedly drew a knife before Turner fired in self defense.
John Kroner, a sign painter, tried to sell a horse valued at 22 for 20 from Fertig & Keevers. Bicycle policemen Nolinisch and Bastain arrested him after learning of the plan to remove the animal from Horace Woods' livery stable. Kroner claimed he would have gone to Cincinnati with the money. Emil Fertig later learned of the horse and was summoned to the police station to claim it.
Guy Houghton 21 of Streator Nil and Lon Comstock 19 of 180 N California Street were arrested Monday by Detectives Morgan and Stewart in a typewriter deal case.
Chandler Bradford cousin of Alvin McLaughlin testified before Coroner Blackwell that John Baison stabbed McLaughlin at the Kingan plant after Baison took a sausage plate. Bradford contradicted Baison’s claim that McLaughlin was the aggressor. Baison’s preliminary hearing was postponed to April 15.
Miss Winifred Moran brought her front teeth to police court as evidence against Mike Dugan who she says struck her mouth and knocked out the teeth. Dugan received 180 days in the workhouse and fines of 11 and 15 dollars for assault and battery and drunkenness. The Moran home at 536 West Maryland hosted the incident when Dugan visited his wife and child. Dugan claimed Moran threw a glass. Moran's mother criticized the sentence and threatened action if he were freed. Dugan resided at 1268 California Street.
Albany April 12 seismograph at the state museum recorded a distant earthquake on April 10 from 2 06 pm to 2 30 pm. Professor Clark stated the shocks had no possible origin in the eastern Mediterranean.
Danville Ind April 12 Scott R Lingenfelter was arrested on ten grand jury indictments charging illegal sale of liquor. He was released on bond. Lingenfelter recently served 30 days in jail for operating a blind tiger. John D Clayton of Platfield is charged with liquor law violations and there is one indictment against him for former actions. Other arrests for the illegal sale of liquor in Hendricks county will follow.
Lafayette reports Gov Marshall will appoint James Cullen to the Indiana Railroad Commission to replace Judge W J Wood whose term ends May 1 The governor has not finalized the appointment Cullen has 29 years rail experience with Wabash and Monon railroads The governor may announce the selection in Lafayette and J K Risk has urged Cullen’s appointment In Chicago James E Patten says wheat will rise further and denies responsibility for current price moves noting May at 1 26 July at 1 161 4 and December at 1 06% to 1 06% Prices advance with large cash sales to mills and plan for new deliveries as Patten expects higher prices

Head officials of the coal trust met in New York to compel the United Mine Workers of America to re sign the three year old wage and condition agreement for the anthracite region. If refused they threaten wage cuts to six years ago and a ten hour day enforcement and a lockout of miners.
Fursell Bird ten, nearly drowned Sunday afternoon in Fall Creek. A peerless swimmer, a boy named Harry Lacey, waded in and pulled Bird to shore before delivering him to City Hospital. Bird, from 43 N. Minas Margret, slipped on the water pipe and cried for help as he sank, later recovering in hospital.
Coroner Blackwell investigates a Monday death at 410 N Senate Ave. Elmer Martin a 37 year old restaurant cook was found in his room fully dressed with no signs of violence. Autopsy reveals a burst artery near the heart and a water bill receipt for Mrs. Della Harter.
Superior Court No 3 judge Carter voiced frustration in the Rosenaweig v Levinson board bill case as testimony showed great discrepancies. The misgivings arose amid a $16 dispute with no party challenging the judge’s remark.
Prosecutor Hooton states two years of cases on Marion County criminal docket. He cites 114 cases for the April grand jury and plans for possible two criminal courts if crime keeps rising. Arraignments include Doty and Miller murder pleas, with defense seeking to withdraw.
A passenger train of the Chicago and Alton railroad was derailed near Mayview six miles west of Higginsville due to a violent windstorm. The coaches were lifted from the track and rolled down an embankment. passengers were shaken but no serious injuries reported.
