Nashville papers report the June 23 blaze at the Tennessee Penitentiary destroying the Hyatt Briggs Moore complex. About 150 convicts worked there daily, many aided in firefighting. a military force stood by. Estimated loss at least 70000 dollars with machinery value around 30000 dollars, insured for 20000, state loss about 10000. Origin of the fire unknown.

From Springfield Mass on Saturday a 65 year old widow Mary Gilmore cut her abdomen with a single blade knife and disemboweled herself. Her bowels were found in a pail of water and a whetstone lay on the table. She lived for about nine hours while a priest attended her and she bequeathed property before death. Cause listed as insanity.
