Dispatches report a General Convention of Fenians held in Covington Kentucky. Other items note a Kentucky Farmer’s Convention in Frankfort January 24, a Louisville Mayorality struggle, and unrest over Reconstruction policy as Mayor Tempert clings to office despite impeachment.
The Alexandria riot began Christmas night and grew rapidly. Military forces under Hancock arrested ringleaders, many wounded, with 50 to 100 confined in a slave pen for the day. a later shooting at a chapel party left a white man named Mitchell seriously wounded. Officials argue the security order aimed to quiet fears, not trigger insurrection.
From Cincinnati December 2 the Fenians of Kentucky met in Covington for a state convention. All circles of the state except two were represented and speeches were delivered by State Center PL Rameon among others. Resolutions endorsing President Roberts the Senate and Secretary of War and repudiating the O Mahoney Congress of January 2 were adopted unanimously and signed by all delegates present.
Messrs Charler and Evans, U S Senators from Colorado, report confidence in prompt admission of Colorado to the Union. The Colorado Legislature passes a joint resolution urging the President to proclaim statehood soon if not authorized, and an amendment to the Constitution is also passed.
An explosion at the Alver and Coos distillery in Deniger Iowa collapsed a boiler in the engine room. Most workers were at dinner. eight inside the building. A fireman died, others unharmed. Loss about 60000 dollars insured for 25000.

Several regiments are mustered out, and Texas planters prepare to use free labor.

Cincinnati markets show firm prices for meats with firm at 12.4 to 12.5 cents for shoulders and sides, lard steady to 14.5 cents, and groceries quiet. Cotton steady at 4. to middling, whisky dull at 22 cents, weather cloudy with a 40 degree thermometer reading.
Chicago market notes mixed prices for flour and wheat with firm corn and steady meat values. Receipts show flour barrels and bushels of wheat and corn while hogs remain active in the trade. New York reports easy loan market and dull stock activity with 7 per cent on call.
