Apelles’s Public Critique Trick From Ancient Greece

Greek painter Apelles famed for Venus Rising from the Sea and Alexander with thunderbolt used a novel method to obtain feedback. After finishing a work he placed it publicly and hid to overhear passersby criticisms. When a shoemaker faulted a main figure, Apelles withdrew the painting to correct it, later rebuking the shoemaker to critique only what he knew. Largely lost to time, he lived in the third century BCE with no surviving paintings.
