The Pittsburg Methodist conference opens with a large visiting group in town. Sessions run daily with sermons, addresses, and discussions on topics like the Bar and the Pulpit and The Preacher and the Teacher, culminating in Sunday pulpit assignments across town churches. A separate note reports a gold standard debate in Blacklick township and a worker injured near Creighton.
The Indiana County Agricultural Society will publish next week in the PLoG RES the list of premiums awarded. The forthcoming issue will detail the awards given by the society to exhibitors at the fair and note premium amounts and recipients.
Four couples tied the knot in a single week at Cevode. Grant Ramey and Miss Mary E. Wyant wed, joined by D C Hoch and Miss J Weint of Punxsutawney. The ceremony was at the brides' mother's home with Lev Hoff man officiating. After a wedding supper, the pairs planned travels to Duisburg and Philadelphia and future homes in Indiana.
Saltsburg residents planned a home wedding with Rev Acken to perform the ceremony at the groom’s house. Guests were invited to Saltsburg for the nuptials and reception planned at the groom’s home. In Mechanicsburg, Mr and Miss Myers tied the knot around 8 o clock as Rev J M Cogley officiated in the presence of friends. Singham Jamison wed in Brushvalley Center Township with Rev H G Graham presiding on Tuesday afternoon.
Jivueit H. Buterbaugh and Bertha KleLeister, both of Green township, married on Wednesday at 6 o clock in Clawson House parlors. Rev. W. P. Kile of Purchase Line officiated.
On September 17 1896 at 3 p m William Philips of Homer City and Lucinda Jellison of Blairsville married at the bride s Liberty street home by Rev J W Criswell.
Mr. William T. Thompson of Marion Center and Miss Carrie Daugherty of Purchase Line married at the Kinter House on Wednesday by Squire James Fenton, of this place.
Mr Samuel L Orner and Miss Louisa Adams of Pine township wed Wednesday at the minister Rev A W McCullough residence Suncliff in a quiet ceremony officiated by the clergyman.
Mr Richard Butler of Nineveh and Miss Sadie S Lemon of Nole were married at the officiating minister Rev L R Wylie s residence in Penn Run on Wednesday. Mr William S Long of Cherryhill township and Miss Georgia Rairigh of Glen Campbell were married Wednesday by Squire James Fenton at his office.
Mr. B. F. May of Pittsburg and Miss Maggie E. Oliver of phehicts were wed by Squire G. J. Kellar in Third ward. Also Mr. M. C. Scott and Miss Elizabeth B. George, both Armstrong county residents, married by Squire James Fenton at his office on Wednesday.
John E. Brewer and Jennie A. McKee of South Mahoning township were married at this place by Squire James Fenton on Thursday. John Nesbit and Elizabeth Simpson, both of Creekside, were married on Thursday at the Register's office by Squire James Fenton.
First criminal session of the week opened amid cases settled and others continued. The docket includes Commonwealth vs Eliza Jane Stewart over alleged cherry theft across the Center township line, while Mikesell and other defendants face assault and statutory rape charges. Judges and commissioners discussed bond issuance to cover maturing debts.
Indiana drew record crowds at the three day fair with Thursday the peak, about 12 000 on hand, and crowds from across the county on Friday. Weather was favorable, dust minimal, and receipts neared four and a half thousand dollars. Notable acts included trapeze performances by Lorenzo and Lotta and fast times in the Free-for-All with Forest Wilkes and Pixley Boy posting top speeds.
Stewart won the top prizes in a fairground track event. Prizes included a $25 diamond First Time Prize and a fastest mile award. Second through tenth prizes covered tires, instruments, shoes, and assorted gear. Paul Gessler topped Homer City for a paper weight. A S Patton donated ice cream to Herbert Fleming as the last finisher. Officials and timers were named.
Mrs. John Mulburg, 51, died when a frightened horse and buggy lurched after a bicycle rider near Elderton. Her husband Mr. Mulburg escaped with severe bruises as she was dragged a quarter mile and neck was broken. The couple left five children and a grieving husband. The remains were buried at Elderton on Sunday.
Blairsville and vicinity Republicans met at the town hall to form a McKinley and Hobart club. The packed gathering heard speeches by John Hill B A Brown Maj T D Cunningham and Prof C R K Gormley with song from Joseph Moorhead and a colored glee club. Over 400 names were enrolled as members. Officers elected include Maj T D Cunningham president and a large slate of ward and district vice presidents. Recording secretary John W Moorhead and treasurer R M Wilson named. A marching club was proposed by Capt W D Wilson and Capt Geo W Creed Jr.
Mr G A Conrath and Miss Sarah E Watterson, both of Green township, wed Thursday in a ceremony led by Rev. Lewis Hay. TIGEE COY. Mr C L Tiger of Canoe township and Miss Verdie A Coy of Elderton married Wednesday in a service conducted by Rev. Lewis Hay.
Mr Wesley F Drummond and Miss Julia A Maust of Blairsville wed on Sabbath at Blairsville in a ceremony conducted by Rev K V Givler. Mr Samuel Dennison and Miss Caroline Beatty of Blairsville married by Squire James Fenton at his office on Wednesday. Mr William B Reed and Miss Elizabeth J Dayton of Blacklick married by Squire James Fenton on Thursday.
Chairman Mack of the Republican County Committee outlines four large meetings in the county over the coming days. Saturday events will unite Clearfield Cambria and the county at Cherrytree with addresses by John A. Scott Judge White may attend W C Arnold and Alvin Evans will speak. Covode Eldersridge plan gatherings next Saturday. On October 1 Clyde West Wheatfield township Republicans raise a flagpole with notable speakers anticipated for a major southern district rally.
Pickpockets operated at the fair grounds last week, with notices posted to warn attendees and officers watching for suspects. Everett Daugherty of White township lost a gold watch near the ring, and Robert Patterson of Rayne township had $21 stolen from a pocket book while he was in the crowd. Several smaller thefts and watches were reported.
Work has resumed at the mines at Vintondale a new mining town along Blacklick Creek in Cambria county. The mines are running day and night with good prospects for a substantial business boom in the area.
The commissioners paid sheep damage claims last week to J. P. Saltagiver of White township for 18.30 dollars and to John M. Ligget of West Wheatfield township for 15.60 dollars.
Buffington constable Croft arrested six boys last week on a charge of disturbing a religious meeting at Barkleys school house the prior Sabbath. The charge was preferred by Rev Rittenhouse.
A Saturday early morning electric storm struck three barns in Canoe township Willet and Pine township. Mr A J States lost his barn contents value 800 with crops. James Tinsal's barn burned with 30 tons hay reaper and livestock. George D Orner's Pine township barn and belongings including cows horses perished. Insurance covered portions of losses.
The Republicans of New Florence erected two McKinley and Hobart flagpoles on Main street and on Saturday raised a 36 foot flag. It is described as one of the largest and most handsome flags in the county.
Democratic Senatorial Conference gathered at the Indiana House on Tuesday afternoon to nominate J. Wood Clark as Jefferson county candidate. Delegates F. T. McKenna J. W. Wilson Mesare Murray Stewart Kinsley and Dr Charles Ernest are named as county nominees with a note that taxes must be paid by October 3.
Residents urged to attend a joint meeting of the four wards in Library Hall on Thursday evening September 24 at 8 o clock to discuss forming a marching club for McKinley and Hobart.
Allegheny City driver W. M. Evans was fatally injured when his horse Forest Wilkes stumbled and fell during the final heat of the Freetor All Tractor race. Evans died Monday night after hours of suffering. He leaves a wife and two children, worked as a livery driver for over 20 years. The horse escaped uninjured and his body was taken home for burial.
Mrs J Glassford of Penn Run died suddenly Thursday morning after a brief illness. She was 35 and in early pregnancy. Survived by husband and three children. Funeral services held Thursday afternoon by Rev L R Wylie. Interment in Harmony graveyard Cherryhill township.
Six year old Adda Bell Meade of West Philadelphia Street died Saturday evening about five o clock from diphtheria. She had been ill only four days. The remains were interred in Oakland Cemetery on the Sabbath.
Mr. Samuel Beck of Covode was severely injured when a stairway fall fractured his skull after a lightning flash woke him last Saturday morning. Dr. J. W. Merow of Marchand attended and called it a very serious case.
The governor finally approved the pardon for John Bardsley, Philadelphia city treasurer, after delay to review papers. News notes his illness and a stroke while his wife, daughter, and sister sent letters to the governor. The pardon follows a Board of Pardons recommendation made earlier.
