The decomposed body of 32 year old Arcadia miner Mike Harduck was found in nearby woods with a bullet wound to the breast. Neighbors split on suicide or murder while coroner W D Gates and Squire Beck investigate. Harduck had been missing about two weeks, leaving a wife and seven children.
Deaths strike the family of Harry M. White of Punxsutawney as Clair and Hazel die from diphtheria within days. Merle, 17, remains gravely ill with pneumonia at his grandparents’ home on Railroad Avenue. The Whites, former residents, suffer through the outbreak and burial to curb spread.
W L Malin of Clearfield the Huntingdon and Clearfield Telephone Company in Harrisburg with officers to push a major upgrade in Indiana County. He said work would begin in two weeks, be rushed to completion, with a carload of poles arriving now and one carload weekly until all lines in the county are rebuilt. The new system will replace the obsolete current setup in every respect.
Mrs. David Potts of Washington township was seriously injured when a horse frightened by a freight train ran away near Advance on Saturday. The Potts were thrown from the buggy. Mrs. Potts suffered severe bruises while her husband escaped unharmed. The buggy was wrecked and the horse stopped.
James W. Johnstown of Washington township sent a forked branch from his apple tree bearing 27 Ameri can apples on a 17 inch stem. A public meeting tonight will feature Prohibition candidate Prof NH D. Patton in Lancaster at the Court House. A smoker event by Washington Camp 723 Sons of America is planned for Halloween in Armagh. Mary Yankovvick, 20 months old, died after falling into a boiler of coffee in Green township.
Edwin Stuart Republican nominee for Governor advocates abolishing local school taxation and increasing aid for roads and charities. He argues a large state surplus exists to fund teachers wages and school needs, while Pennsylvania’s public education system remains strong and progressive under Republican policy.
Borough officials consider state aid to macadamize key streets linking White township to Revel area. Property owners would cover one eighth of construction plus curb and extra width. state bears bulk of cost. A council meeting is set to discuss details and secure endorsements. Streets targeted include Wash Philadelphia to Fourth, West Philadelphia to Thirteenth, South Sixth to Lowest, Wayne to Seventh, North Ninth to Water, Oakland to Eleventh, and North Wirth to Chestnut.
A local group forms the Indiana Amusement Company to erect a modern skating pavilion on former Sheriff Just New’s lot on Carpenters Avenue. M A Hook awarded the contract to complete within days, pavilion 142 feet long, 0 feet wide, with traproof, ticket office, skate room, waiting and smoking rooms, private boxes, and orchestra loft. Floor of maple, 7000 square feet, balconies along both sides, to host skating events and dancing, with I I Timberlake as manager. Opening aimed for December 1.
Obituary notices report Henry Ma Cluskey dying at 62 after a long cancer illness following a sudden collapse on Collins avenue near Kellysbury. Violinist with Pittsburg ties, he had lived in Wittsbuys and Homewood area. Also listed are the deaths of Mrs. Thomas Carnahan aged 35 and Joab Sloppy aged about 70, with funeral and burial details, plus other local passings including A Denton Craig and Will Rumbaugh, with brief family survivors and interment notes.
HM Lowry and White of Sixth Sheet plan a Monday gathering with friends. Mrs Susan Yount of Gastown invites neighbors to a Saturday visit at her home. Thieves robbed the Gaul and Donaldson residences. canned goods and a gold watch were taken. Ben Ashbaugh, ex Saltsbury banker, is appointed cashier of the Bank of Bingklick set to open January 1. he is married to Mrs Nancy Lowry’s daughter.
Republicans across Armstrong County held lively meetings in Creekside Shelocta and Strongstown with key speakers including J. Ne Langham A M Wonder and M C Watson. The gatherings drew large crowds as campaign issues were clearly presented and votes urged for the party of Progress and Protection.
