Long Life of a Hermit in West Wheatfield

Near Johnstown a log cabin in remote West Wheatfield Township houses Katherine Luther, nearly 87, who has lived as a hermit for half a century with only a cow and chickens for company. Neighbors fund a new home and stove as her old cabin needs repair. She recalls a panther encounter and has refused charity, proud of her independence while news comes through neighbors. Born December 29, 1816 in Lycoming County, she moved to East Wheatfield as a child, married George Luther, separated, and now lives alone with her daughter Louise and sister Susan Miller as her only close relatives.
