Prospered in the West George Spaulding's rise and irrigation island
Indiana born George Spaulding, now a California millionaire, returns to his home county. A Civil War veteran, he built a fortune as a machinist and inventor of a popular plow, then funded a major irrigation island north of San Francisco. The 7 500 acre island yields 40 000 bushels of potatoes, barley and beans, with 2 000 sheep shipped. Chinese laborers farm small plots and receive pay.

Thanksgiving Parade Origins and English Guy Fawkes Ties
The New York World notes that Thanksgiving day parades of curiously dressed children resemble English Guy Fawkes day customs. Scholars like Professor Brander Matthews link the two observances, dating back to a 16th century plot to blow up Parliament. Fawkes day faded, yet some English traditions linger in American Thanksgiving parades with disguises and effigies.
