Pass Written by Lincoln Lasting Peace Letter Card
General James W. Singleton of Quincy, Illinois, preserved a Lincoln pass dated April 18, 1865, reportedly the president's last. The document captures Lincoln's stance on emancipation and reunion, noting that military rule hampered immediate action while urging Virginia and other seceded states to rejoin the Union. The account ends with Lincoln’s assassination, and Singleton kept the card under glass in a gold case, a dated relic of a moment of peace.
