Resignation of Rev J M Welch at Second United Presbyterian
Rev J M Welch Ph D resigns as pastor of the Second United Presbyterian church effective immediately at Sabbath morning service after over 12 years in Indiana. He came January 1 1898 and will be acted upon at a Congregational meeting Saturday with Cone-Maugh presbytery likely to concur Monday. Welch, a 20 year church worker, graduated Allegheny Theological Seminary 1891 and supported temperance iniciativas as Indiana Anti-Saloon League president. He previously served in Philadelphia, Home Mission work in Iowa, and in Olympia Washington county prior to Indiana. The congregation prospers and Welch leaves with a good record.

Public to Inspect New Savings & Trust Building Receives Invite
The Savings & Trust Company plans a visitors day to inspect its new building with a date to be announced in newspapers later. A quarterly dividend of 2.5 percent will be mailed to stockholders on April 1, drawn from earnings for the quarter ending March 31. Census Agent H C Patterson visits Indiana counties to gather mine and factory statistics over coming months. A parsnip found with a bone in Water Street, Water Street resident Daniel Vant reports a 15 inch specimen. An Odd Fellows lodge of 40 members was organized at Pine Flats with Rey Hy Tate Noble Grand and W E Roberts serving as secretary. Civil War veteran H Reed Adama, now an invalid, is supported by comrades. A H Schaffer of Burnside received 618 post cards for his 77th birthday. Fires devastate Marion Center area townwide blaze and damages
Two dwellings burned in morning and afternoon fires in Marion Center and Ho tel City. An oil house at Prairie Incubator works caught fire from sparks, burning oils and paints. A gasoline explosion injured two, and a row of brush and grass fires threatened property. A high school group aided in stopping a restaurant blaze on North Sixth Street, saving the building. Firefighters and residents battled flames with water hauled in barrels as the church area faced threats from sparks.

Indiana County Man Describes Wreck Horror
Lewis Stiteler, son of James Stiteler of Smickburg, recalled the Rock Island train wreck near Marshalltown Iowa on March 21 that killed 44 and injured 38. He reported survivors scrambling from the last intact coach, gruesome scenes of blood, crushed passengers, and scattered limbs amid fire blamed on misplacing two light coaches between the engine and Pullmans.
