Hell Gate charters disaster kills hundreds of picnickers

An excursion boat carrying about 1,000 German Lutheran Church members caught fire on Wednesday near Hell Gate. Panic ensued as women and children leaped into the East River and drowned while others burned. Thousands watched helplessly as relatives searched for missing loved ones among the dead.
