Stock for a local company with capital of 85000 is being collected to establish a concrete products plant in Johnstown. Plan calls for two plants locally, with 26000 capital and strong local subscription. Prominent businessmen and several capitalists showing interest to ensure success. A Monday night meeting discussed organizing the venture and securing funds.
The June term of court closed on Saturday with Judge White presiding. Several cases were hotly contested and night sessions were needed. Verdicts favored plaintiffs in three suits including Conner versus Bovard for 4.55 and Roberts versus Roberts for 551.29, while Rhodes versus Borough of Blairsville directed for 87.04. Lantry versus Stifler resulted in a nonsuit. Devinney, convicted of larceny but not yet sentenced, appeared with injuries from his last altercation.
The Progress will feature a 12 by 16 inch facsimile of the original Declaration of Independence next week. The cut shows signatures like John Hancock and Thomas Jefferson and is copyrighted to be used only in this issue. Additional copies are available for four cents in stamps or at $1.00 from the publisher. reprinting elsewhere will be prosecuted.
Discussion covered plant operations and product lines for a new Indiana Jefferson counties venture. Promoters J L Orr and J B Richards visited the Johnstown plant, noting patent protection and territory purchase options. Products include building blocks, lintels, paving blocks, curb stones, and decorative faces, with demand rising as 20th century stone replaces wood and natural stone in construction. The Penn Run Kenwood baseball game results and local property sale noted.
After drinking heavily he went to his father-in-law’s home and found trouble. He appeared before Judge White who sternly lectured him. He claimed he drank to drown his troubles. The court sentenced him to two years in the Western Penitentiary and Sheriff Josigh Neal conveyed him to the state prison on Friday.
Benjamin Price, a 45 year old former Brughvalley resident now living in Conemaugh, Pa, attempted to cut his throat with a razor during a mental derangement attack but survived when found by his wife. He had worked as a butcher in Conemaugh prior to the episode. In a separate Allegheny county case, Mrs James Brendlinger formerly of West Wheatfield township and now Pitcairn, was acquitted of murder for shooting a woman she claimed was stealing her husband’s affections. she also wounded the rival.
Marchand select school students invite friends and the public to a Friday outing at their closing day with baskets and a day of activities including a ball game against a neighboring club. On Sunday Mrs. James Landish of Blacklick township was thrown from a buggy when her horse bolted, breaking her right leg above the ankle.
John Kimmell a well to do farmer near Elderton, aged about 24, killed himself with a rifle in a barn after writing letters to his young wife and his father claiming he was homeless and uneducated. He was a son of Rev. Lewis Kimmell and had recently married Miss Merdio Calhoun. Funeral services were held at the Kimmell home, with burial in the family burying ground.
Andrew Kline of Armstrong township dies at 80 after a disease. Survived by wife and children Simon Joseph William George Mrs Sarah Laxman and Mrs Mary Baker. Funeral at his home led by Rev G S Holmes with Oakland cemetery interment. An infant of Wallace B Stewart dies in Monesson and is buried in Oakland. J A Holmes, former Blairsville resident, dies in Allegheny. interment at Blairsville.
School board notes list reelected and newly hired teachers across Homer City Mechanicsburg Elders Ridge Barnesboro and Pine mats Sumex schools. Names include E J Welch Viola Simpson Pearl Allison L M Warmon C B Delancey W Korda Gibson and others. Also reports a shaft accident at Chambersville and a buggy wreck near Curry Run church plus property improvements in Chuck Street and a small postal stamp theft at Mower City.
Over 200 descendants of John Worl gathered at Rochester Mills for a reunion. Members brought baskets and shared a noon meal at the United Presbyterian church. Afternoon speeches were given by M I Work Andrew Suino ck M J Sieate and others. Officers elected: President Miss Ibta Work secretary 7 Wt WMakhey. Next reunion planned for June.
The Nest Form Glass Works will close next Saturday and reopen August 1. The annual union manufacturers agreement prompts the pause. This year the usual four week vacation has been extended to six weeks, with several workers affected.
The National Republican Convention in Chicago nominated Theodore Roosevelt for president by acclaim. Charles Warren Fairbanks of Indiana was also nominated for vice president, with the expected formal notification to Roosevelt at Oyster Bay and Fairbanks to follow next week. Pandemonium followed the announcements as thousands reacted.
A detailed schedule for July Fourth activities in Punxsutawney including arrivals of special trains on the Pennsylvania Railroad and Buffalo Rochester Pittsburg line, parades on East Water Street and Philadelphia Street, concerts led by the Punxsutawney Military Band, an address by Hon. Frank McLain, gymnastic exhibitions by the Flying Rabbins, fire company contests, battalion drills, and a fireworks display ending with an illuminated Union shield. The day closes with departure of trains in the evening.
Anil Midsminer Dane will host the annual young men’s dance tonight in Library Hall. Thursday Night Dancing Club runs the event with golden red and white decorations and a large daisy centerpiece. Presbyterian Catering serves refreshments and Atelz ner’s Pittsburg orchestra provides music. Dancing starts at 8 and goes to midnight. Patrons include several town society members and organizers.
Spelling variant wedding notices and local social happenings reported from Crafton, New Moruga, Blairsville, and surrounding areas. Couples married include George W. Gleffman and Zou G. Cramer at Chorrybree, and David D. Bennett with a New Moruga bride. Social events feature receptions, dinners, and decorative monuments, plus notes on a new Ernest schoolhouse bid and a Youngstown marriage.
