Nevada tale of Senator J P Jones seeking a hired fighter for the election. In a saloon a rough visitor parades a brutal description, tests two strong men Jim Cartier and another, hiring the best for outdoor combat and warning of nocturnal dangers.
A Pittsburgh orphan Alice Anderson, raised by Bellefonte families, travels to Pittsburgh on a letter promising work. She reunites with brother Dennis Anderson, a retired railroad contractor, and inherits five hundred fifty thousand dollars from grandmother Ruth Anderson if found. She is twenty-two, modestly educated, and plans to study for two to three years.
A Cincinnati Commercial reprint describes Senator Jones as financially prodigious, living in Sec retary Stanton’s former house opposite Franklin Square. Jones hosts grand hospitality with costly art, wine, and carriage ensembles, while his health and diet suffer from heavy spending and he grants large gifts such as a 34,000 cheque to Miss Grants.

The notes reference Boss Tweed, a Boston monument idea, a Bible panorama exchange, a cross eyed man on a Detroit street car, a lawyer and a young witness, and a school district firing over a risqué verse. It also mentions Dutch losses in Suumatra and a farmer’s duck powered potato bug remedy.
In Wayne County Tennessee a woman at a house raise, with her two children near a spring, hears her daughter scream. A rattlesnake bites the child and is killed. The other child drowns in a tub. The father, trying to descend from the house frame, is killed by a falling timber. Within thirty minutes, both children and the man die.
Weed and Greeley details an anecdote from Nassau street where Harlow Weed bought a lithographic portrait of Horace Greeley. At the Astor House Col. Charles A. Stetson wept, saying the likeness revived memories of their friendship and forgiveness. Weed kept the portrait as a treasured reminder of their long association. Noted later that winter wheat regions have not enjoyed such excellent crops in a decade.
A Cedar Falls Gazette correspondent recalls General Belknap Secretary of War in a Washington visit. He recounts Belknap’s westward move from Iowa, swapping a clerkship for the War Department and eventually becoming its head. A Boston Globe idea about lifetime Senate seat for ex Presidents is noted as a provincial suggestion.
