Two Ways to Sell Corn on the Hoof for Hogs

The Eagle XK compares two feeding methods. One hog gained 100 pounds needing 12 bushels of corn and 33 cents per unit at a $4.00 per hundredweight price, while the other used 514 bushels of corn and 50 pounds of blended supplement for the same gain, returning three cents per unit after protein costs, with less labor and disease risk and earlier market readiness.

Blended protein supplement makes grain feed go farther

Purina researchers report that a properly blended protein supplement allows 100 pounds of pork to be produced from 50 pounds of supplement and a little over five bushels of corn. This reduces corn needs by more than six bushels per 100 pounds gain, saving labor and shortening time to market amid feed shortages.
