A humorous and cautionary chronicle follows Alvin Winthrop, an American heir famed for fearing random death by a truck. After worldwide travels and a world cruise, his obsession shifts through steamships and planes, ending in tragedy in London. The piece mocks fatalism while recounting his legend and ultimate death by a cyclist in Piccadilly.

California Earthquakes Lengthen Building Lots

A man affected by the California earthquake measured his building lot eastward and found it 14 percent longer than before. A principal street in Lost Angeles widened its width by six to eight inches, with 11 inch cracks opening on side streets. Geological changes occurred in a sandy spit about a mile and a half long and 400 to 900 feet wide, widened by four feet in places. Four additional feet of pipe were needed to repair the water system in some streets. Despite stretching, little damage to houses occurred.
