Big Decrease in Pennsylvania Death Rate in 1912
Pennsylvania health officials announced the 1912 death rate fell to about 14 per thousand, the lowest ever in the commonwealth. Dr. Samuel G. Dixon credited public health work, sanitation, and coordinated medical efforts for reductions in typhoid, diphtheria, measles, scarlet fever, whooping cough, tuberculosis, and overall deaths, noting that over 17,000 lives were saved and more than 170,000 spared from acute disease losses. The Department of Health, seven years active, aims to push the rate still lower and eliminate preventable deaths.

Mustin and the Navy Gun Telescope Breakthrough
In 1885 the telegene faced lens breakage and slow firing. Midshipman Henry C. Mustin at Annapolis tackled nonbreakable lenses by shrinking a metal band around a glass disk. He dropped the lens to prove its resilience, demonstrating a breakthrough enabling long range gunnery for the modern navy and spurring nations to build dreadnoughts.
