Dunkers Oppose Rum and Regulate Members
The Dunkers or German Yaplist-Brethren have long led temperance action among churches. An 1700 vow barred members from selling rye to distillers and forbade renting property for drunkenness. A Middle Pennsylvania meeting created a temperance committee to defend homes and aid districts in fighting drink evils. A doctor warned a hard drinker to eat whenever cravings struck, a remedy that cured him but led to a strange incident at a hotel involving a tongue sandwich and public uproar.
