Obituary notices recall Rev Jesse M Jamison longtime county figure born 1808 near Creekside educated for ministry and Indian missionary later teacher evangelist. He lived in Tilinore until retiring at 80 and is survived by third wife one son and one daughter.
McHenry interests push options on over 5 000 acres of coal lands east and northeast of town with 590 000 plus to landowners at 25 per acre. Deeds to be issued to W D Bigler as trustee, payments split over two years with interest. Field spans White Rayne Cherryhill Green and Grant townships, tying local coal wealth to railroad capitalization.
Samuel Black married Miss Bessie Harri son at the bride’s Morongahela home with Rev Maxwell officiating. Black is son of Mr and Mrs William Black of Cherryhill township. couple visited Black’s parents and planned return to Monongahela. Verdorff Spires wedding also noted. Halvey Overdorff and Tessa Spires wed at the bride’s Brushvalley home officiated by Rev H B Seese.
Findley Cameron of Buffington township resurfaced after more than 28 years, greeting his brother Wellington and visiting in Buffington. The long-mourned man traveled from Wisconsin to return home. Also noted are four teaching appointments: G S Lowman to Widdowson school, Reber Emerick to Rossiter, Ruth Hamill to Toad Alley, and Berths Shields to Owl Hollow.
A new post office named Blaides is established in Buffington township with Samuel C. Graham as postmaster. William H. Householder reports a bumper oat harvest from four acres near Reed station, delivering 230 bushels.
Idlewild will host a large merchants picnic with 24 passenger coaches planned for an 8 am train. All Indiana stores and many businesses will close for the day as the 74 cent round trip outing attracts broad participation. A charity game features Indiana versus Derry.
Mr and Mrs Samuel Reed of Blacklick township sat in a buggy when a cannon blast frightened their horse. Myre Reed was thrown from the buggy, severely injuring her back and rendering her unable to sit or stand. She was carried home on a cot that evening and will need several days of nursing to regain strength.
Kerr and Herlinger, local builders, won contracts for two new houses. One is a nine room residence for Dr William Honack on South Eleventh Street with foundation work starting this week. The other is a six room dwelling for William G Gibson on West Water Street.
Creekside resident Thresher W. T. Wilson operates an Improved Peerless thresher driven by Frick 15 bore power engines. In four hours last Thursday he threshed oats on four acres for J. D. Cummins, yielding 400 bushels.
Three of William Harman's cows in White township were killed by lightning on Wednesday afternoon. The animals were under a tree when an electric bolt struck and shattered the tree, causing the fatalities.
Daniel C. Ansley, 21, freight brakeman on the Cresson and Coalport branch, was killed when thrown from a moving train near Cresgon. His widow is under 16. A series of accidents injuries including J. H. Singer’s wagon crash, a berry picker’s fall, and a grandmother struck by a bicyclist are reported. The day also marked the Indiana County Baldiers’ 16th annual reunion with sham battle, campfire, and multiple army unit reunions.
A Court House meeting of local businessmen discussed creating a Farmers Telephone System exchange here. Over 60 potential stockholders signed on, with shares priced at per, granting access to the line minus telephone and setup costs. Temporary chair D H Tomb and secretary Squire J A Crossman were chosen. a committee including Frank Douglas, R N Ray and J C Conner will report on wiring costs and exchange setup at the next meeting on Thursday evening, September 4.
The thirteenth annual Indiana County Christian Endeavor Union convention begins this afternoon at 2 o clock in the Presbyterian church of town and continues until tomorrow evening. Delegates from county unions are in attendance and expected to bring strong enthusiasm. Prominent speakers include Rev. C F Sanders Blairsville Rev J C Broomfield Pittsburg Rev John D Hicks Altoona Rev Holmes Dysinger Vandergrift and Mrs R H Hay Allegheny.
At a survivors meeting the 105th regiment appointed chairs to organize the October 16 reunion. Finance and badges go to W. W. Brilhart, decorations to Col. John McGaughey, reception to Capt. Ww. Kimple.
Charles Kelly of Blacklick faces a assault and battery charge filed by Thomas Runzo. He was arrested Monday and will be heard this afternoon before Squire J A Crossman.
Two mild cases of smallpox reported at Saltsburg with several Salina residents also infected. Boarding trains and stations advised caution as health officials investigate spread.
Congressman 8S. M. Jack appoints Dr. H. Li. McCullough and Tom Feebrand from Cookport and Senator John S. Fisher to attend the congressional conference in Punxsutawney on Tuesday September 16 to nominate a candidate for congress in the district.
A meeting of fair managers secured the Reed band of Johnstown to furnish music during the coming fair week. It is likely the Plumville cornet band will be secured for two days in addition to the Reed band.
Constable Jacob Wettling arrested W. B. Seven of Paltebars on a charge noted by 8. M. Trimble of Balteburg. Seven posted bail for court. Details unclear due to damaged text.
A traffic accord with the Pennsylvania railroad will allow Webrum coal to reach the lakes via its lines to Bells Mills, where transfers occur to the Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburg railroad. The BR&P route extends to Bells Mills with a probable Pittsburgh aim, while the BR&P has mapped Beils Mills southward. construction on the Pennsylvania line along Blacklick creek continues with completion expected late this fall.
The David Mallen property on East Oak Street sold to Levi Fry of Cherryhill township for 1375. Fry plans to move to town soon. E C Garee of Montgomery township bought the Frank C Hile property on North Sixth Street for 900 and intends to move this fall. Joseph Griffith of Homer City purchased two lots at Elevanth and Grant streets from Mrs J W Stewart for 200 and will begin building a dwelling here shortly. All transactions were conducted through real estate agent G W Gilbert.
The will of the late Samuel C Henderson of Armetrong township was filed last week. He leaves his farm proceeds to his widow during her life, then directs that the estate and personal property be equally divided among his three daughters Nancy J. Fleming Jul ia M. Cunningham and Elizabeth L. Wiggins. The will is dated December 18 1900 and Nancy J Fleming and Elizabeth L Wigging are named executrices.
The Peter Garman property at Maple and Railroad sold this week to Hiram St Clair for 1250. Frank C Hile bought the J A Torrence property on West School Street for 950. Sales arranged by Roof and Kline. A group from Pittsburg and nearby towns enjoyed an outing at the Normal School this week. New faculty member Miss Jessie Apperman from New York becomes critic teacher and assistant superintendent. Dr W D Gates accompanied Mr Benjamin McCreight to Pittsburg for a Homeopathic hospital operation. Mrs McCreight suffers a diseased jaw bone. Mrs White, wife of Judge White, seriously ill with dysentery. children at Pittsburg and Wheeling recalled. Louise Langham celebrated her eighth birthday with about 50 friends. A family of opossums noted.
