McCormick Bridge Fire Follows Repairs Near Blairsville
The McCormick covered bridge over Blacklick creek north of Blairsville was burned Saturday morning, hours after county paid $398.68 for repairs. Authorities suspect arson as debris had been cleared an hour before the blaze. The 211 foot wooden bridge, built in 1874 at $3624, linked Burrell and Blacklick townships. an iron crossing may be pursued after legal steps. A temporary ford below the site will serve until better crossing is arranged. Separately, John Malcolm’s White township home burned Tuesday, destroying most contents. loss about $2600 with $500 insurance. John Burkett’s barn near Deckers Point also burned Thursday night, attributed to spontaneous combustion. stock saved, loss about $700 with $600 insured.

A 14 year old boy, Brooks Carr, son of John Carr near Vanier, was struck and killed instantly by lightning while running from a barn as a storm passed. A purplish imprint of a tree branch marked his chest. he leaves a father, a brother Clarence, and a sister, with burial at Covode. Stella Kuntz, daughter of Mr and Mrs Geo Kuntz near Punxsutawney, died when a window pane shattered by high winds sent glass across a room striking her neck and severing the jugular vein. she bled to death before aid arrived.

Boy 8 Falls From Hay Loft Fractures Skull

The second annual Mikins Buckwheat reunion at Colemans park Goodville drew about five thousand with attendees from Indiana DuBois Falla Creek Punxsutawney and Mahoning towns. A basket dinner preceded an election naming Francis Elkin president and T C Istkin secretary treasurer. County Superintendent James F Chapman recalled Elkin kinship ties and urged descendants to uphold family standards. A 1920s era historical sketch traced Elkin origins from Anglo Saxon roots to western Pennsylvania settlement. Reunions for related families and Lutheran congregations were planned for August at various locations including Smicksburg Trade City and Buffington township.
