Seven year old Michael Nettowich died after a 22 caliber rifle in the hands of 15 year old Logan Faith discharged in the Nedowich yard. An inquest found accidental death and Faith was jailed pending county investigation.
Deeds recorded show numerous transfers from Hannah Sluman to B K Shelak and J A Leve to Indiana County Deposit Bank. Others include George Waugaman selling 6 acres to Samuel Colgan and Rebecca Ringle conveying a lot to her guardian for 2800, with many additional parcels and nominal sums listed across Green, Plumville, Smicksburg, Center and other townships.
In the county 386 took professional and provisional certificate exams. 214 passed and received certificates mailed by County Superintendent James JF Chapman. Result percent nearly matches prior years. Names listed include Harry Crawford Marion Center Elizabeth Blackley Wehrum Blaine Dick 105 sees Clymer Elmer Lydie and many others.
Judge O Connor in Cambria County habeas corpus case grants absolute release of J A C Ruffner from Dixmont asylum. Ruffner, formerly of the area, will practice law in Ebensburg, with attorney S M Jack representing him. He had been briefly released to testify and then freed by the writ, and seeks to establish his legal career with clients in Ebensburg.
Misses Nora and Ollie Gibson of Rayne township visit Misses Hthel and Leona Lydie. Several residents travel to Indiana and nearby towns for visits. Notable visitors include Hon. James B. Barrett in Washington PA and Attorney Harry W. Earhart. Outings include Chautauqua and a two week automobile tour to Philadelphia, Allegheny City, New York, and Boston.
Jacob O'Hara a well known farmer of Cash Creek Montgomery township was fatally crushed under his traction engine on a public road near Hooverhurst on Thursday. He slipped while turning the ditched machine and was pinned beneath it, dying a few hours later. Survived by wife and several children. funeral held at his home and interment at Rowley cemetery.
Thousands witnessed the governor’s review as the Second Brigade encampment closed, regiments returning home Saturday, with a city full of tents and visitors. Gov. Tener and staff attended a military ball, praised Indiana hospitality, and many said they would return in two years for the next encampment. The Sick List notes several local illnesses, and church services and missions offerings are reported along with bee-keeping highlights from Mitchells Mills.
The list shows new instructors for three Pine township schools Strongstown Clair and Pineton and for West Wheatfield schools No 1 to No 12 named with teachers including Clark Dick Hood Clawson Wakefield Liggett Walbeck Duncan Mabon Lewis Felton Walbeck Cunningham and others. Evan Wodgon of Smickshburg has been chosen principal of the Dayton schools.
Mr and Mrs George Hart of Saltsburg celebrated their golden wedding on Thursday July 20 with about 50 friends. The couple, who came from England in 1881, have lived in Newrytown and Saltsburg for 21 years. They have three sons two daughters twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr Hart is 70 and in good health while Mrs Hart is 74 but has faced poor health for years.
A week of marriages links New York to Lewistown and Ebensburg to Pittsburg. Couples include Pneuman Laveen, Hoffman Reese, Robinson Kiebler, Jamison Baker, Hoffman Lyster, Montgomery Penrose, Nellix Prody, and Fairman King, with ceremonies in Lewisville, Pittsburg, Saltsburg, Cumberland, and nearby towns. A local horse accident, license grants, and a county military band open-air concert are noted alongside a court adultery hearing for W J Hartman.
A miner named George Swituch of Wilgus, Montgomery township, died after a quarrel at Andy Baluges boarding house. Charles Ratkall, aged 23, is jailed charged with murder. Others injured include Tony Grabowlski and Carl Zelinsky. Ratkall and Switach reportedly fought with a miner’s pick used as a weapon.
Miles Wall, Curwenavitle faith healer, demonstrated healing by laying on hands at the Central hotel. Fees are 75 cents per application. Reported successes include a crutch user walking home and a child sleeping without pain. Wall says divine power came after 20 years of scripture, medicine, and prayer. He plans another visit but won’t specify a date. Also notes Republican candidates Boggs and Wagner paying announcement fees.
J Telford filed an order creating a new election district in Cherryhill Township. W J Short is appointed judge with Levi McGuire as majority inspector and Edward Widdowson as minority inspector. Luther Helman to be election constable. The district No 2 polling place will be near J W Howarth’s store. Also noted are typhoid cases at the Williams home and a local drug store change. Noble C Miller bought the Clark Neal drug store near the post office and is now operator after graduating from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Park Younkine clashed with his brother Harry Seragtoy on Church Street.
The Halravithe District of the Pree Methodist church opened a camp meeting at Tollewood Park Bonthor town yesterday continuing in session through August with daily Holiness Meetings Love Feast preaching and children's events led by Anhniaer and local pastors Bishop Walter A. Sellen may attend later in the week. Old commissions for William Shields of town were shown, his grandfather having served as captain in the Third Company 30th Regiment Militia of Pennsylvania in 1861.
The NP encampment ended as Homer settled back to ordinary life with temperance preaching planned for Sunday at the Baptist church. Visitors from nearby towns boosted crowds. the local field hosted a large turnout and a lively game against the 5th regiment. Local factory managers sought workers, hotels housed visitors, and water shortages pressed the town while autos joined the post-encampment parade. Nearby residents returned for visits as church and family ties remained strong amid the week’s bustle.
The county hosts numerous August family reunions at Coleman's park in Goodyville including Elkins, Buckwheat, Sprankle, Bartlebaugh Conner and Bouchers. A special train to the Buckwheat picnic runs 7:30 am to Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburg lines. Also noted are extended family gatherings at Tanoma and nearby homesteads, with dances, dinners, and church festivals planned across many townships.
