The judge addresses license renewal, hearse petitions, and upcoming dates, while estate disputes and administrator actions dominate the record.
Heavy rains boost production for Twolick Lumber Company as 1.5 million feet of logs are dammed at Homer City mills. E M Moody and 14 logmen hauled timber from Yellow Creek over three days, lodging at Central hotel owned by Marcal. Court filing deadlines approach as Bennet Weresup officiates a Sunday marriage for Willian Mack and Martha Myers in Cherryhill township.
The county union schedules a two day Christian Endeavor convention on August 15 and 16 with J H McGinity as secretary and Stew Cowan of Pittsburgh as featured speaker. Indiana hosts a large program of praise services, prayers, reports, and addresses by leaders from Ebenezer Blairsville Blacklick and other communities, concluding with a consecration meeting led by Prof Archibald and speakers including Rev J Cowan.
The Lockard family from west Sutton street Fourth ward gathered last week for a heartwarming reunion. All members including grandchildren attended, totaling 24 guests entertained at the old home. The children presented their parents with a handsome sideboard, a cherished keepsake from the gathering.
The firm McIlwain & Richards of Saltsburg has been dissolved after years in business. The entire store except the carpet and shoe department, run by J H Richards, was sold Friday to J M Montgomery of Pittsburgh. Mr Mellwain, in business there 36 years, will move to Los Angeles this fall with his wife and daughter.
The Barnesboro Cambria County school board elected C. W. McCrady Hillsdale as principal Daniel McAulty Barnesboro as intermediate Miss Phena Cresswell Pine Flats as first primary and Miss Emily Williams Barnesboro as second primary to lead the full school for the coming term.
Mr Charles W Fyock of Clearfield county and Miss Minerva McGaughey wed at the bride’s parents Penn Run home on Monday evening at 8 o’clock. Elder Joseph Holsapple of the Dunkard church officiated.
Residents near Harmony graveyard in Cherryhill township will meet Friday of next week to tidy the yard and graves. Attendees should bring baskets and at noon enjoy a picnic in the grove.
Dr. W. O. Cameron of Johnstown based at Armagh enjoys a large local practice. He is well posted in his profession and, as a young man, pleases people in the area admirably.
Fore James Chapman of Georgeville who graduated at Normal this year has been elected principal of the school at Big Run in Jefferson county at a salary of $57.50 per month.
Poor Overseer R M Crawford of this place went to Dixmont on Saturday and brought home Joe Smith who has been confined in the asylum for four months.
The Board of School Directors reports wide applicant interest for country districts as teachers are elected across centers including Center township White township and Washington Five Points. Salaries show small changes with some districts raising wages while others cut slightly. lists name selected teachers and schools opening dates.
Josiah Widdowson of Rochester Mills died at his Robertaville farm on Thursday evening from Brights disease after weeks of illness, aged about 70. He leaves an estate valued over 100000 dollars, mainly timber lands and property, plus a general store and multiple Rochester Mills holdings. He was interred at the Twolick Baptist church graveyard near Dixonville on Sabbath.
Clark McGaughey of Blacklick Township died Wednesday evening from stomach trouble at age 41 after years of ill health. He belonged to Crete United Presbyterian Church. Survived by wife and children Alvin Mabel Lula Jennie at home. Funeral held Friday with Reverends Littell and Ferguson officiating. Interment at Crete church graveyard.
Indiana wagon maker J C Stuchell sells patents for skein and blank nut threader to A G Morris & Son of Tyrone. Morris to manufacture and market the devices with exclusive rights after royalty. bonus of 150 dollars received. Devices repair wagon spindles without axle removal and produce faster, cheaper repairs. Stuchell has repaired over 400 spindles using the machines and expects strong demand once on market.
Harvest Home services were held at Blacklick M E church near Cramer from Saturday to Monday. Pastor Rev W B Bergman was assisted by Rev M M Sweeny and Revs Pershing and Wakefield. Upcoming sermons include Rev L R Wylie at Taylorsville Presbyterian next Sunday at 10:30, and at Nebo at 3 pm. Greenville preaching on August 16 at 10 am. Indiana Baptist Association circles meet August 18 at Twinick Baptist church. No preaching in M E church next Sabbath due to unfinished building, expected reopen August 23. Rev Herbert Loomis of Dr Conwell’s college will preach at Brush valley and Dilltown next Sabbath. Hood schoolhouse in White township to host services next Sabbath at 3 pm. Indiana Baptist Association meets at Blairsville September 23 for three days. Rev C W Teasdale will preach in Blairsville next Sunday morning and evening.
Commissioners awarded contracts for mason work on three bridges Friday. Little Mahoning creek at Lewis fording will be built by M. K. Lewis at 2.12 dollars per cubic yard. Blacklick creek near Wintondale goes to J. B. Marlin at 2.07 dollars per cubic yard. Cush creek near Gipsy in Montgomery township awarded to J. W. Long and 5. W. Williams at 2.47 dollars per cubic yard. All bridges must be finished by October 10.
Miss Emma Barber its Dixonville milliner home was struck by lightning Wednesday evening. The bolt hit the chimney entering the house and damaged the plastering but did not ignite the building. Barber was away, possibly escaping a severe shock.
Miss Anna Nicholson presided at a thimble bee party at her West Water Street home on Tuesday evening. All ladies attended, bringing their fancy work, and a lawn dinner was served, honoring Miss Heidrick of DuBois.
A butterfly social will be held at Cock port by the Willing Workers of the M. P. through Saturday evening August 15. Refreshments including ice cream lemonade chicken pie and pressed chicken will be among the many good things served.
Langham and Miller drew the jurymen list for the September term this week. The list appears in this week’s PROGRESS. A show is set for Indiana on Monday August 17 and bills are being posted today.
A small fire broke out in Plumville on Wednesday when a child of Elmer Cribbs struck a lighted match among shavings in a barn. The blaze quickly spread and the barn was totally destroyed, with the heaviest loss being the stored lumber.
Mr W G Lockard, recently graduated from Baltimore medical college, has established a practice in Jacksonville. He is the latest addition to the town’s physicians, bringing new medical services to the area.
A group of Indiana men returning from a Duquesne lumber camp witnessed a freight train crash into Mr. W. H. Miller who died in the mishap. His companion William Kime narrowly escaped, leaping to the bank as Miller was crushed under the wheels. Miller's funeral was held at 1 PM Tuesday with Rev. Dr. Hall presiding. he is survived by a wife and two brothers.
A Wednesday evening storm struck east of town as a bolt hit the Nathan Simpson farm barn burning it and its contents. G. E. Simpson, away at a neighbor's, returned to find all lost. no stock was harmed though 25 tons of hay and grain were consumed. Uninsured and the barn, a recent build, is not to be rebuilt.
Deputy J H Boring and local lodge members canvassed the town for two weeks securing new names for the Royal Arcanum No 305. They plan to finish this week and expect nearly 100 applications for membership in the popular insurance organization.
The Rain Drops and Dewdrops juvenile teams met at Normal grounds on Friday afternoon. The visitors won the prior game on their field and then defeated Indiana boys 17 to 8 in Punxsutawney to a large crowd.
Fire broke out in the early hours near 4 30 Thursday damaging parts of Mr J C Egley s house in the Third ward. Neighbors joined him to extinguish the blaze and the loss is placed at about 50 dollars, covered by Cameron s insurance agency.
Mrs. Jane M. Lowman of Jacksonville Pa arrives in Traer Ia on Thursday at noon and will stay with her sister Mrs Adair and family for several months. She expresses satisfaction with the town and surroundings.
Wrogan, a young son of Hiram Stuchell of Rayne township, suffered a deep gash on the left arm last week when a scythe blade swung by a farm hand struck him in the field. The injury, not life threatening, left him nursing a sore arm as he recovers.
Miss Nell Menges, a member of this year's senior class at Normal and well known in Indiana, has been elected as a teacher in the Port Parry schools where she resides.
Mr. S. J. Ruffoer, the new merchant at Georgeville, operates a hotel in competition while his store is now ready to cade.
