San Francisco in History and the Forty Niners Era
A historical sketch of San Francisco from its 18th century founding through the gold rush and early municipal turmoil. It covers early European visits, the 1775 fort and mission, the 1849 fire era, the vigilante committees, pivotal murders, and the city’s cosmopolitan growth by 1900 with rising foreign-born population and open-city reputation. The piece traces fires, governance, lynchings, and demographic shifts shaping the metropolis.

Early San Francisco to Gold Rush Flourishing Era
Independence and Spanish rule shaped a sleepy town that grew after gold discovery in 1848. Commodore Montgomery’s 1846 action ended Mexican dominion, selecting Lt. Washington Bartlett as alcalde. The city’s rough 1850s layout centered on Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, and a network of adobes, tents, and shanties near the cove.
