A Springfield temperance note discusses the PROGRESS War on liquor led by women, praising perseverance, detailing public meetings, police restraint, and clergy support. It cites revenue drops in Ohio and Indiana, reports men’s skepticism, and honors women for daily labor and devotion in closing saloons.
From Mineral Riper Ohio dated March 20 1874 reports abundant mud and mild weather signaling early spring. Crops look promising with fall grain strong and fruit underdeveloped. Coal iron banks and railroads show improved activity with high daily tonnages and new road exchanges near Girard. Town building accelerates as Warren and Niles temperance crusade gathers support with a major meeting at Presbyterian church and a social plan launching temperance societies.
On March 18 1874 winter term scholars presented declamations essays and dialogues with instrumental and vocal music despite bad roads. Rev Andrew Virtue opened with prayer. Miss Lizzie McCoy received heartfelt praise as an able teacher as parents thanked Centre Presbyterian for church use while scholars bid her a fond farewell. Rev A Virtue gave the benediction.
Elderton remains a thriving village with about 600 residents. The town lists one bank, two hotels, six stores, multiple crafts shops, three churches, two schools, a public schoolhouse, an academy, and a staging school taught by Prof. J. H. Kissinger. Measles are prevalent and Jacob Fiscus drowned at Cochranes Stills on the 9th and found on the 17th.
West Lebanon items report McGeagh and son expanding business and Dr. Hosack planning to move to Main Street. McMillen family to relocate to Irwin Station around April. Roads drying but rough. Local injuries include Thomas Cooper Indiana and Joseph Fulton recovering after buggy crash. James Carney improving slowly. Minor repairs by Cal Bare and mentions of distant Palestine weather and temperance themes.
