Indiana Borough Council voted to set the 1933 general fund tax at 64 mills and 2 mills for the sinking fund. The cut totals 44 mills from last year. Dr G F Simpson noted the city faces distressing economic conditions and urged strict economy across departments while plans to convene further consider budgets.
Snow today and tomorrow will bring much colder, stormy weather according to E. C. Lorentz. Dismal skies and drizzle yesterday give way to storms and a dropping thermometer today. Rainfall reached .47 inches. pedestrians hurried for shelter amid the persistent cold.
Governor Gifford Pinchot announced he will push for a continuance of the public service investigation by the Senate committee. He said the inquiry should continue, asserting utilities with things to hide want it stopped and that the people want the investigation to proceed.
Harrisburg March. Lackawanna Steel Construction Corp of Buffalo won an 22410.96 contract to build an 18S Heat steel truss superstructure in Johnsonburg Elk County financed by the borough. Also note a Colonial Tea and quilt exhibit at Presbyterian Church Thursday p.m.
Andrew W. Mellon will remain ambassador to Great Britain for the time being at the request of the new administration. He had planned to sail home but changed plans after Washington asked him to stay, possibly for a month or 80. His likely successor may be Judge R W Bingham of Louisville.
Janet Gaynor, screen star, filed for divorce from Lydell Peck, her husband and screenwriter, alleging he was unduly jealous and suspicious, prone to anger, and harassing her over trivial matters that disrupted her work. The complaint was on file March 8 at 108 Angels.
Denver report states an international warrant is under way for Vine Sankey and Gordon Mikhorn, believed to have taken part in the $60,000 ransom for Charles Boettcher II. Six defendants face kidnapping charges filed by U S District Attorney Ralph W. Carr tied to the abduction from his Denver home. Arthur Youngberg, captured earlier, attempted suicide. others remain in custody.
A March grand jury returned murder indictments against Everett Wilhelm of Creekside and Jesse Hayes, 11, of Heshbon, for killings in December and November 1920. Wilhelm also faces a separate charge of disturbing a public assembly. Both suspects are in custody. another indictment cites robbery and firearm charges against Steve Sebastian and Ed Sarnosky of Lucerne Mines.
Washington Pennsylvania March 8. State and county officers searched woods near Harts Mills seven miles east for Dave Thomas a World War veteran who yesterday ran amuck at his home firing a shotgun at his wife and son and eluded capture after barricading himself inside for an hour. Thomas had been released from Washington County jail last Saturday on a peace charge after being jailed two weeks when his wife Margaret reported threats.
In Jeannette, two rescuers risked collapse while attempting to reach Anthony Tiekuractis, 52, buried in an ash bin as tons of ashes surged through a clogged chute. Samuel Adams, street foreman, was unconscious but stabilized. Chief of Police Charles Walter was saved by a rope.

The Indiana County Tax Justice League will hold its monthly meeting in the Courtroom on Friday evening March 10. The group had moved from the second Saturday to the second Friday of each month. Proceeds from the event go to The Colonial Ladies of the Allison Class, Presbyterian Church, for the town. Admission is 10 cents with 65% likely not accurate.
Secretary of the Treasury Woodin announced there would be no scrip sanctioned as circulating medium by the Federal Government. Instructions were sent to member banks to concentrate gold and gold certificates in Federal Reserve banks as a step toward expanding Federal Reserve notes backed by gold and eligible paper. Woodin praised public cooperation and signaled currency expansion would begin gradually after the bank holiday ends. Roosevelt to ask Congress for broad banking powers to address rapid shifts in the sector.

Notify residents report the death in Evanston TL of Dora Hood Smith a native of Indiana county and former local resident. She was daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Hood sister to Mrs Mary Work Steele and to Hu bert Work and Sara Work Lytle of Denver. She leaves a daughter Edena Smith who lived with her. Funeral services and interment will be held in Evanston tomorrow.
A Washington conference of leaders plans a united front to block ratification of prohibition repeal. The effort centers on involvement by about thirty churches and dry groups, with a continental committee guiding an executive board of nine. Meanwhile the Allison Class of First Presbyterian hosts a Colonial Tea exhibit tomorrow featuring old time quilts, with sponsors in colonial dress serving light refreshments after church services.
Harrisburg March 8 The House approved the Sordoni measure by a 160 to 8 vote expanding the Banking Department powers to limit withdrawals during emergencies without closing banks. The bill moves to the Senate for concurrence in minor amendments before heading to the governor. Dr. William D. Gordon urged immediate enactment prompting the hurried approval.
A major blaze at Halle Brothers department store in Erie Pennsylvania caused about 50000 dollars in damages. Firemen fought the flames for five hours and several firefighters were treated at the scene for smoke exposure.
A fresh request for extradition of Jesse Hayes 26 a miner held in Harlan Kentucky for the murder of John Bellas at Heshbon on November 28 1980 was sent to Governor Frank Pinchot in Harrisburg by Sheriff Eugene Wilson and Deputy H Elmer Borland. Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon earlier rejected the extradition claiming insufficient papers since no indictment existed. Papers were sent after the March grand jury returned an indictment. If a new warrant is issued Hayes could face Frankfort hearing. a writ of habeas corpus was denied.
Interment for Simon Krebs, famed for developing and selling Somerset County smokeless coal, will be held Thursday in Somerset, Pennsylvania. Krebs died at his Tampa Bay area home in St. Petersburg, Florida, after a career beginning with gold prospecting in California and rising as coal magnate at the Listie mine. He drew ocean vessel business by personally showing how coal should be stoked to prevent elevators.
A Penn State alumni dinner is set for Saturday evening March 11 at 6 30 at the Moore hotel. All Penn State alumni in Indiana county are invited. Earl E Hewitt will speak on the work of the state legislature. An alumni council member and local club officers will be elected. Reservations must be made to J W Warner at the Court House phone 71 by Saturday morning.
Westminster College President R F Galbreath spoke at the 125th anniversary observance of First United Presbyterian Church. Dr John J Mellvaine introduced Joshua T Stewart, longtime Sabbath School superintendent, who traced the early growth of the Sabbath School and church. Galbreath urged forward movement with three points Why How Who and emphasized individual and group effort for progress.
