Catholic sources report Communist authorities have seized most church offices in Czechoslovakia and arrested priests who resisted. Police warned priests not to read a pastoral letter accusing the government of fraud and kidnapping, while the hierarchy warned of an impending hour of trial.
A Blairsville motorist, Donald Gerhardt, faces a charge of failure to yield after a three car collision on Route 22 near Mundy’s Corners at 3:30 p m Saturday. Gerhardt, who fractured his left leg, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel while Eb ensburg state nplice reported the others involved were F G Herrington of Fairbanks and Ward Dietzel of Altoona. Herrington’s wife sustained facial and elbow injuries. Total damage was about $800. Chages against Gerhardt were filed with Justice of the Peace 5. Cunningham.
Attorney William T. F Pierce of Indiana County is admitted to practice law in Indiana County court. Sponsored by his father William E Pierce, he clerked in his father's firm after Dickinson Law School graduation. A Allegheny College graduate, he plans to open in Cunningham Building next to Manos Theatre.
Police seek two hitchhiking women after a man, 22, ex G.I., Charles Klevis of Frackville, is shot and slugged. He is in critical condition after emergency surgery to remove a bullet from his stomach. Detectives describe two suspects, one about 25, the other in early 30s, both in blue jeans and pullover shirts, heading toward Williamsport or Wilkes Barre.
Miss Ermal Cunningham of 982 Phila Street Indiana Pennsylvania died this morning at Indiana Memorial Hospital. She was daughter of the late A. and Rebecca Jane Repine Cunningham. She is survived by sister Grace Miller of Indiana and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at Robinson's 36 N Seventh Street Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday until 2 p.m. Interment at Oakland, Indiana, Pa, with Rev. David R. Graham officiating.
John Chedrick appeared in Indiana County Court this morning and pleaded guilty to drunken driving committed on May 10. He was sentenced to six months in the Allegheny County Workhouse and ordered to pay a $250 fine plus costs.
James Rosenberg aged 20 from Tanoma and Clarence Snyder aged 21 from Cleveland were convicted for shooting firecrackers within Indiana Borough. Rosenberg paid 13 dollars and Snyder 11 dollars after a hearing before a local justice of the peace. Violations carry up to a year in prison and a 500 dollar fine.
An eight county Regional Realtors Conference will be held at the Golden Yoke Tea Room in Luthersburg on Tuesday with more than 100 attendees from Elk Clearfield Jefferson Blair Mifflin McKean Lycoming and Indiana Counties. Local and state speakers will discuss housing and rental issues taxes insurance and related topics.
The U S defense rested its case in the Judith Coplon espionage trial as government rebuttal witnesses began. Wil liam E Foley, Coplon’s boss at the Justice Department, testified to counter her account of an FBI decoy memorandum. Chambliss and Shimkin testified for the defense.
A Friday afternoon blaze at the Altman lumber mill between Marchand and Richmond destroyed the plant as 50 000 board feet of lumber were ready for shipment. Owner Harold W. Altman of Rossiter put losses at 15 000 to 20 000 dollars, not insured, with Central Fire Company arriving around 2 30 p m but unable to save the mill. One employee was present and could not stop the fire.
Three Indiana men were arrested Sunday morning for smashing windows with their fists. James Duncan, 22, of 1130 Church Street, Robert Barry, 41, of 272 Philadelphia Street, and Joseph Sturiale, 22, of 1928 Water Street, were released from jail on $50 bond each and faced a hearing today.
Homer W. Koontz of 585 Philadelphia Street Indiana today announced his candidacy for Burgess of Indiana Borough. Petitions for Koontz are being circulated among Republican voters, with him serving as president of the Indiana Borough Council.

In New York on June 27 the government opened cross examination of Alger Hiss at 10:08 a.m. EST. The 44-year-old former State Department official is accused of perjury. Lloyd Stryker, defense counsel, handed Hiss to the government after about 25 minutes of direct exam. Stryker said Hiss’s wife Priscilla will testify. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Murphy began the questioning for the prosecution.

London reports June 27 44 Winston Churchill has recovered an inscribed gold watch he gave away sixty years ago for aiding him during the Boer War. Churchill as war correspondent was jailed by Boers and escaped with help from two British miners who hid him. He later awarded watches to them. One recipient Joseph McHenry died leaving the watch to his wife, who has now died and left it to Churchill, who today disclosed his acceptance.
Bernini widow of Louis dies at 12:20 a m in Blacklick after 42 years in Blairsville Blacklick area. Born Parma Italy December 4 1887 she belonged to St Bonaventure Church. Survived by husband four sons and several daughters 13 grandchildren two step brothers. Funeral by Robinson Funeral Home Indiana. Brief home services Thursday then St Bonaventure Blacklick with Rev Fr Yanosek officiating burial at St Simon and Jude Blairsville.

A five year old Heilwood boy Blair Galasky Jr walked with his father when a Brush Valley driven car backed up to allow a truck to turn into Nixon Alley and struck him. He was examined at the hospital with no apparent injuries seen by borough police.
