Johnson warns labor and industry under new recovery act

Davis to Visit Roosevelt on Amberjack Cruise

President Roosevelt remains aboard the Amberjack off Campobello Island as his party continues a leisurely cruise along the northeastern coast. Tomorrow they plan to take aboard Ambassador-at-Large to Europe Norman H. Davis for talks on the world disarmament conference, after which the Bernadou will transport Davis to join the Amberjack somewhere near the Bay of Fundy.

Earthquake Kills Seventy in Sumatra Region

An earthquake today near Benkoelen Sumatra killed 67 people and damaged towns south of the area. Batavia reports say Palembang and Kota suffered casualties with numerous homes destroyed and communications disrupted between Moenta Doewa and Sumppun gan.

Baptist Ministers Open Conference at Bucknell University

The Baptist Ministers Union of Pennsylvania opened a three day conference at Bucknell University in Lewisburg with about 100 ministers in attendance. Bucknell will also host the Pennsylvania Baptist Young People's Convention from Friday through July 1, continuing the events through the weekend.

Woman suffers broken back in bleacher fall at Erie

Mrs. Anna Steinhoff 41, of Albion, is near death at Humot Hospital after a 12 foot fall from the bleachers during a motorcycle stunt program in Erie Pennsylvania. Tore? injured when spectators fell.

Harrisburg report states ninety two persons were licensed as pharmacists and assistant pharmacists by the State Board of Pharmacy in April and May. The list includes Louis Gatti among the pharmacists and notes the initiative in appointing licensed professionals across the state.

Inmate Hangs Self at County Home

An 86 year old county home inmate Joseph Vargo was found hanging from a tree in a woods near the institution late yesterday. Coroner Frederick W. St. Clair said Vargo left the home after breakfast Friday with likely intent to walk to Coal Run, a frequent visit spot. He had been an inmate about two years and his body was taken to Streams mortuary with relatives not yet located for funeral arrangements.

Gunman brothers wound marshal during flight spree

In Fort Smith Arkansas on June 26 two machine gunners Glyde and Melvin Barrow, brothers wanted for six murders, shot Marshal H. D. Humphrey of Alma as they fled a posse. Mark Loftin, car hijacking victim, identified the brothers from police pictures. Humphrey remained near death in a local hospital after the robbery incident.

Ammonia Tank Clears Out Cafe in Pittsburgh

Ammonia fumes from a burst tank at a downtown Fifth Avenue cafe drove about a score of office workers and employees into the street in Pittsburgh. No one was injured. The cause of the accident was not immediately determined.

Kenyon V. Painter, a Cleveland capitalist and director of the defunct Union Trust Co., has accepted a judgment for 3 158 855 in a suit by the bank conservator. Painter was shown as a borrower of that amount to buy more bank stock to boost its price.

Shields Home Is Destroyed By Fire Near Indiana

Fire on the Indiana Clymer highway about 9 50 last night destroyed the home of W C Shields. The family was away at an evangelistic meeting. John Ortner saw the blaze and alerted the house. Everything inside was lost as the wash house barn and garage nearby were saved. Loss estimated over 5000 with some insurance. Community offered help with dishes bedding and clothing for the Shields family who have no transport. Call 4144 R13 for assistance.

Slayer of Step-Son Executed Today

Joseph Kurutz, 47, of Northampton County, was executed at Rockview Penitentiary for murdering his 15 year old stepson Jos. Posch. He walked to the chamber at seven A M and was in the electric chair at 7 01 A M, pronounced dead four minutes later. The sentence applied to a single charge.

Week End Accidents Report From Pennsylvania Roads

International News Service records show weekend traffic costs a four year old girl and a 51 year old man in Pennsylvania. Mary Begley, four, of Jaquesne, died after being struck by traffic near home. Frank B. Clark, 51, was found dead on Lincoln Highway near Lancaster in a suspected hit and run. Lancaster district toll lists one dead six injured including three children.

Full Military Funeral for Capt McLain

A full military funeral and burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC, was held Saturday for Captain Charles Lucas McLain, 43, Indiana native and wartime commander of Company F, 119th Infantry. He died Wednesday night at Mount Alto Hospital after serving as Charleston district foreign trade and domestic commerce manager since 1930. He held French and American decorations for bravery and valor and served in World War I with 15 months in France.

Alleged petty thief nabbed in car on Philadelphia Street

Charles Howard, 29, of Shelocta R D 8, was arrested at 12 20 a m yesterday by borough police at Philadelphia and Seventh streets on larceny charges after Robert Riddle reported a suede jacket stolen from a car on the opposite side of Philadelphia street. Police recovered the jacket and found tools, hamburg steak, coffee and tea in the car. Howard claimed he was a salesman and did not say where he obtained the items. Police urged anyone missing tools or foodstuffs from parked cars Saturday night to contact them.

Mrs. Mary Morrison, 36, was shot to death while seated on her front porch with her 19 year old son Joseph. A male killer in a passing car fired five shots, four hitting the victim instantly. A blonde boy about three accompanied the slayer, motive unknown as police search for a motive and suspect.
