He will demonstrate a hand duster for insect control and a hand wheel hoe, discuss various vegetables and growing tips for newer varieties, and provide direction sheets for treating vegetables for garden insects. Attendance is open to all interested, meetings last about one hour, dress is not required. Direction sheets are available at the Extension office in the Court House.
James C. Lucas, the Alcatraz convict who stabbed Al Capone, was held in solitary confinement today as authorities study the case. U S District Attorney H W H Mc Pike said he expected a report on the matter.
James H. Johnston, ward en of the San Francisco Bay prison, said he knew no plans to bring the former Texas bank robber to trial. Capone, described as superficially wounded, was attacked by Lucas who lunged with scissors. Lucas, serving 30 years for robbery, led the January uprising alongside Capone, who was jailed for income tax evasion.
Indiana Lions Club members and guests were entertained by an instructive and interesting talk from Dr Lawrence M Thompson at their Tuesday evening dinner meeting.
Barkley urged broad federal power to regulate cross state commerce and labor, challenging Hoover era limits and Landon. On page 3 yesterday the paper ran a photo of a fine eight year old Guernsey bull named Fairacres Count 106619. The animal belongs to the Elders Ridge Guernsey Bull Association, not to Mr Henderson individually, and has been used in all three communities of the association. The photo was taken last Saturday at the John Henderson farm by county agent A. W. Warner.
Obituary notices report the death of Mary Catherine Layton at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the home of her daughter in South Bend. Born April 17, 1849, she was a longtime Indiana County resident and Christian Church member. Survived by daughter Mrs Clyde Walker, son Walter Layton, three sisters and one brother. Funeral set for Friday at Streams Funeral Home with interment Greenwood Cemetery. Also noted are the deaths of Noletta Garman Gwin of Ogden Utah, born Ebensburg June 2 1866, and Patrick O’Hara age 52, who died after injuries from a car accident returning from a baseball game in Charleroi. O’Hara’s funeral planned at the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption in Ernest. A third item lists John Robert Greenway two, who died of acute bronchitis at Blairsville home. Philadelphia June 4 The Rev Edwin H Rian general secretary of the newly formed Presbyterian Church of America predicted nationwide growth for the conservative denomination. In the wake of controversies in Philadelphia and New Jersey presbyteries the church suspended Rev Dr J Gersham Machen and placed Westminster Theological Seminary on a black list while urging a probe into Tenth Presbyterian Church for inviting Machen to speak. Clergymen Rev David Freeman and Rev Theodore Jansma were ordered to quit their Philadelphia pulpits.
Harold L Neal, formerly agency consultant in Pittsburgh, is named district manager of Indiana County for The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, effective June 1. Born in Dayton, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1931, married Mae V. Marshall in 1935, and has specialized in estate planning and wills, aiming to reduce taxes for policyholders and prospective clients in Indiana County.
Harrisburg June 24 John D Pennington secretary of welfare approved a Shamokin State Hospital board decision to remain a class ed staff institution. The board voted unanimously not to hire non resident doctors despite petitions from some physicians.
