Captain C L McLain Dies in Washington War Hero
Captain Charles Lucas McLain 43 formerly of Company F 110th Infantry died at Mount Alto Hospital Washington DC after an illness. A war veteran decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross and Croix de Guerre he served in France and Mexico and later held a Commerce Department post in Charleston, Indiana. He was born February 9, 1890, in Indiana, son of Major Charles C. McLain and Martha Lucas McLain, and descended from Revolutionary War veterans. He enlisted in 1907 and rose to captain, receiving multiple honors before retiring due to war wounds. He was active in Indiana and Pennsylvania National Guard circles and affiliated with First Presbyterian Church and local Masons.

Water Tests At Co Home Demonstrate Fire Protection
Last evening two Indiana Fire Department pumpers were brought to the County Home to pump out the sump built there for fire protection. They used large hoses to expel about 30,000 gallons in eight minutes while water from a hydrant was circulating. Officials say with one hose it would have taken over two hours to empty the pool. County officials and many residents were pleased with the experiment and believe protection is now sufficient for emergencies.
