NYA Plans Youth Work Centers Across Pennsylvania

Harrisburg June 15. The National Youth Administration proposed creating resident work centers in about 20 Pennsylvania cities to aid college age youth in gaining vocational training. Walter S. Cowing said centers would mainly be in college towns, offering about $30 monthly, 70 work hours, and three month courses. Each center could house about 60 students, totaling 1200 or more statewide. Funding depends on a new federal appropriation of 75,600,000 to NYA. Pennsylvania would likely receive about 7,500,000. Students would repay roughly 20 monthly for board and lodging, leaving about 10 for spending. One likely site is Pennsylvania State College with a joint college group and agricultural program planned. NYA employs about 14,000 youths nationwide on clerical, nursery, school, hospital, and construction projects.
