Need for a merchant marine to boost U S trade gains
Washington June 12 The United States faces a crucial need to develop a merchant marine to expand foreign trade. Samuel Vauclain of Baldwin Locomotive Works told a National Association of Credit men convention that high freight rates to overseas markets hinder US business. He cited Germany’s low labor and freight costs as a competitive edge. Dr L S Rowe of the Pan American Union urged American merchants to bolster confidence with Latin American customers and praised the high standard of commercial morality there, calling for stronger business ties and organizations.
