Dewey says he will not seek presidential nomination again

In Albany on December 29 1950 Thomas E Dewey renounced future presidential ambitions while keeping open the governor seat. He appointed Charles D Breitel to the State Supreme Court fueling speculation he would retire from public life at year end. Dewey stated he would not seek the Republican nomination in 1952 1956 or 1960 and joked about years beyond 1960.

Nationalists thwart Red flotillas in Hainan coast raid

Nationalist military sources report shore based artillery on Hainan Island silenced several Communist flotillas manning boats. Small scale landing attempts hint at a planned major Red assault on Liuchow Peninsula, as guerrilla activity grows inland. General Hsueh Yueh returns as island commander with Gen Yu Han Mou as deputy.

Red State Plan Wins Easily in Romania Parliament

Bucharest December 29 The Romanian Parliament approved by 376 to 2 a State Economic plan for 1950 calling for a 37 percent rise in industrial output and an investment total near 1 billion dollars. The plan envisions close cooperation with Russia and joint economic planning with the Eastern Bloc Council for Mutual Assistance.

Potts Faces Charge Over Illegal Passing in Town

Information filed against George C. Potts of Indiana RD 3 by Indiana Borough police alleges illegal passing at a town intersection. The case names Potts and specifies the alleged traffic violation and location.

Luzon Shaken by Major Luzon Tremor

A heavy Luzon earthquake lasting two and a half minutes hit Isabela Province hardest with landslides and sea waves. A woman drowned at Mercedes, a boat with eight passengers was saved after capsizing near Malalan Ferry, and a jeep vanished in a ground fissure near Nauguilian. Many towns isolated, Red Cross reported fissures and black water in Tilagan. In Cabanatuan a stampede injured women and children. Roughly the 500 mile length saw widespread fear and structural damage.

Hiss Ends Ordeal As Witness in Perjury Trial

In New York on December 29 the prosecution finished cross examining Alger Hiss, the high state department official on trial for perjury. Hiss testified last on December 19, with cross-examination spanning nearly three days since December 21, resuming after Christmas. The government revealed Hiss offered to supply a psychiatrist to the grand jury, an offer that was rejected, and the jurors asked for the psychiatrist’s name, which he said was Dr. Carl Binger of Cornell Medical College.

Betty Lou Marbury a 10 year old from Brownsville Tenn rests after an operation to remove her diseased right hand a malignant bone tumor caused the need for amputation between wrist and elbow doctors in Memphis and Boston advised the procedure to halt spread while three nurses tend the patient her condition described as good and prayers of the nation were offered for her recovery.

Two County Men Die Of Heart Attacks

Indiana County residents Emmet S. Bisley of Black Lick Township and Earl W. Shank of Blairsville died of heart attacks. Bisley was found at home yesterday afternoon by visiting friends, while Shank was found on a coal car in Gallitzin last night. Obituaries appear in today’s paper.

Coal Conference to appeal to NLRB over miners three day week

Pittsburgh based Coal Wage Conference plans to urge the National Labor Relations Board to declare John L. Lewis three day work week an unfair labor practice. George H. Love of Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal says operators have not moved to sign separate agreements. He calls Lewis tactics coercive and notes few producers have yielded to union pressure.

Pilot dies after plane crash on Devil Step Mountain

In Crab Orchard Tennessee on December 28 a 35 year old pilot from Houston Texas was found dead after crawling more than a mile from a plane crash site seven days earlier. He suffered a broken leg and exposure in subfreezing rain on Devil Step Mountain. The wreckage had been located the day before.

Taxes Cut Wide Swath Through Family Income

A Federal Reserve Board report shows in 1948 American families paid $9 of every $100 in Federal income tax, matching per hundred spending on autos and appliances. About 76 of each $100 went to other consumer expenditures, with net saving the remainder. Tax shares varied by income, from 1% at the top to 1% at the bottom, and nearly one third of spending units tied to families pooling income overspent their 1948 income. six percent stayed even, six and a half saved part of their receipts.
