New York reports show Christmas sales lagging 3 to 10 percent in total dollar volume, while unit sales hold steady. Clerks handle as many packages as last year, yet prices average about five percent lower. Merchants hope final rush and an extra shopping day boost sales to top last year.
The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that a trial court may hear damage actions arising from breach of contract to restrict leasing or sale by race, despite the U S Supreme Court decision invalidating such real estate agreements. It held the breach action does not violate the Constitution, noting the high court has not ruled on one party suing another for breach of a restrictive agreement.
Decatur Illinois, December 19. The coldest night yet this winter drove Jack Frost south, as a retired farmer near Taylorville plans to winter in Florida. Thermometer fell to 1 below zero in Decatur, with winds making conditions feel harsher.
A cloudburst struck the town near Sao Paulo causing extensive damage and leaving hundreds homeless. Floodwaters six feet deep swamped lower areas and disrupted gas, telephone, light, and train service. local officials urged residents to seek shelter and await aid.
Orrin M. McMillen 62 of Blairsville, Indiana County Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds, died yesterday after illness. A Republican, he had just been elected to a third term after first winning the post in 1942 and earlier served as Blairsville burgess from 1922 to 1925. Born October 8, 1887, in Westmoreland County, he moved to Blairsville in 1905, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, then served in World War I with the 116th Infantry band, 28th Division. He is survived by his parents Samuel M. and Mary Ida (Thompson) McMillen. Continued on Page Five.
Karachi December 13. A Pakistan Transport DC-3 crashed 45 miles north of the city. All 21 passengers and four crew were reported killed. Officials said Maj Gen Sher Khan and Maj Gen Iftikhar were among the casualties. Rescue parties were sent to the desert site after the crash.
Israel follows cautious path after U N vote to internationalize Jerusalem. Prime Minister Ben Gurion seeks to avoid inflaming tensions while Knesset debates declaring Jerusalem capital. US advice promotes restraint as Jerusalem remains divided between Jewish and Arab areas and potential government shifts are discussed.
In Spencer Massachusetts two gunmen robbed the Worcester County Trust Company Branch escaping with $1000 in cash. Bank manager Manley S Kelley and five employees were herded into the vault and locked inside until the robbers escaped. Kelley had previously opened the vault door and spun the combination preventing reclosure. Spencer is a town of 6800 in central Massachusetts about 50 miles west of Boston.
In New York on December 13 the Alger Hiss case heard Dr. Stanley Hornbeck defend Hiss’s integrity. Hornbeck said there was no evidence Hiss took papers to a Russian spy and affirmed Hiss as a loyalState Department official. He cited Bullitt calling Hiss a fellow traveler and noted他 would have reported unauthorized note taking.
Jurors assembled yesterday in Indiana to hear testimony on five cases after a guilty plea by Clair Mogle in a robbery charge reduced the initial seven cases to five. The session proceeds with the remaining hearings and expected rulings.

Christmas vacation for Indiana public schools will begin at 2 30 p m Thursday December 22 and run until 8 30 a m Tuesday January 3 according to a school board announcement. There are Christmas programs in several schools. The Magi Gift will be presented by the Junior High Friday at 8 o clock p m. Mr and Mrs Horace Manns Christmas Party is set for December 20 at 2 30 p m at Horace Mann. A Christmas Carol Sing will occur at Thaddeus Stavens School next Tuesday evening from 7 to 7 30 p m. The high school evergreen decorations by Robert Kline will adorn the building. Brade schools evergreen trees will be decorated. The 55th annual Pennsylvania School Directors convention will be Feb 2 and 3 in Harrisburg Educational Building forum. Director Harry MacCann was elected to attend as a delegate. Superintendent B C Perry and Mrs Clyde Bath will also attend. More members may attend under a new legislative act. See PUBLIC SCOOLS.
The vacancy in the Indiana County Register of Wills and Recorder of Deeds will be filled by Gov. James H. Duff for a two year term pending a regular election. Donald Shank, deputy Register and Recorder, a World War II veteran, is favored for the appointment.
Pittsburgh December 13 The State Supreme Court is asked to rule if private land can be taken for a redevelopment project adjoining State Point Park at the apex of Pittsburgh Golden Triangle The Urban Redevelopment Authority seeks purchase if possible but may resort to condemnation The case is prompted by Albert W Schenck a part owner at 420 22 Penn Avenue who has occupied the disputed area for 40 years and wants a clear legal definition before giving up the property
New York and northern New Jersey received steady rainfall of over an inch from northern watershed areas. The wet spell revived dry streams and added snow cover in places, easing drought concerns for the metropolitan water supply. City officials warned a water shortage remains and announced conservation steps including a water holiday on Friday.

A Capital Airline plane crashed into the Potomac River during fog near Washington, killing four and injuring others. A Nations Broadcasting Company mobile TV unit arrived at the scene to broadcast the rescue operation on the air.
About 1,600 workers joined a wildcat strike against state owned utilities in London. By afternoon 2,600 of 10,000 electrical workers were idle, threatening a return to wartime power cuts. Troops were to maintain essential services while 1,400 left Barking Station, prompting Navy technicians to take key jobs and RAF help to stoke fires.
A Capital Airliner veered off a radar path into fog at National Airport and crashed into the Potomac River mud. Four of the 23 aboard died, 19 survived rushed to nearby Bouling Air Force Base hospital. Pilot W J Davis and aircraft crew were Alexandria residents. two victims named Nev ie Lassiter and Mrs William Chertow.

Governor Duff set the week of February 17 1950 for the electrocution of John William Givens 52 of Beaver County for the July 1947 hatchet murders of Joseph Neugebauer 73 and Matthew Magana 70 at Mt Gallitzin Academy near Baden Pennsylvania. Givens a farm hand testified he killed them out of being tired of being pushed around. He was arrested six months after the killings and later sentenced to death by Judges Robert B. McCreary and Morgan H. Sohn.
