In Wheeling West Virginia on August 1 27 a mother and her ten year old daughter were picking elderberries when a man named Joe Berthy seized the girl and fled into a vineyard. He forced release after a chase, but the child jumped from a cliff into a quarry ravine about twenty feet down, suffering probable fatal injuries. Berthy remains at large as police pursue him.
A chaotic scene on a street corner as Salvation Army services drew a crowd. A trolley accident, in which four year old Hayes was fatally run over, led to arrests of Salvation Army members who refused to move from the area. Police removed the drum corps, while bystanders and officials debated responsibility.
