First Lieutenant John W. James and five Eighth Infantry privates were killed in hand to hand combat with Pulajanes at Julita Leyte. Indictments Charge Standard Oil and Partners in 24 Counts

The Western District of New York federal grand jury has returned 24 counts each against the Standard Oil Company of New York and the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and a smaller number against Vacuum Oil of Rochester for violating interstate commerce laws. The indictments allege improper concessions, through rate manipulation, to ship freight and a failure to file rates with the Interstate Commerce Commission. The total potential penalties could reach $1.4 million if all counts are proven. The jury adjourned to August 23 for a report. Separately, six indictments were returned in New York regarding alleged railroad rebates in sugar, with names not released publicly. The grand jury will resume mid-September.
