Dos Passos Dies at 74 After Long Illness in Baltimore

Famed author John Dos Passos, creator of the U.S.A. trilogy, dies aged 74 after years of heart illness. He spent recent years between Baltimore and a Westmoreland Virginia home, with his second wife Elizabeth, while his first wife Katherine died in a 1947 car crash in which he lost an eye. Dos Passos, born in Chicago to Portuguese descent, championed labor causes in early works, later shifting to critique workers as “Labor Naders” in his Midcentury. Meanwhile a U.S. Air Force Captain, Tommie Sue Smith of Johnson City Tennessee, files a federal suit accusing a regulation barring mothers from foreign assignments as sex discriminatory. The 35-year-old officer argues the rule unjustly excludes women from custody-based provisions that do not apply to men.
