Free Canyon Fires Rage Around Los Angeles Area
Giant brush fires burned out of control in the hills near San Diego and Los Angeles forcing about 50 000 residents in southern San Diego County and thousands more in canyon areas near Los Angeles to flee. The San Diego fire burned 150 000 acres and threatened toward the Mexican border while the Malibu to Newhall blaze covered 114 000 acres destroying around 30 structures. Winds slowed by Sunday night allowed firefighters to push back the flames as arson suspicions lingered and three deaths were confirmed. Governor Reagan declared disaster areas in Los Angeles Ventura and San Diego counties as evacuations and military stand by continued.

3 500 Acres Charred in Orange Co
Two fires blackened more than 3 500 acres in the mountains of north and east Orange County prompting precautionary evacuations for about 200 people. A single home was charred and no injuries were reported by late Sunday. Palos Verdes Grass Fires Brought Under Control
Fire units from Torrance Redondo Beach and the Los Angeles County Fire Department helped Palos Verdes Estates firefighters extinguish two small grass fires Sunday night.
