Nixon eyes fast breeder reactor plan at Hanford

President Nixon announced a joint government private project to build a second fast breeder reactor aimed at clean inexpensive electric power. With $200 million private backing for an initial prototype and $500 million estimated for the second unit, site location remains undecided though Hanford Washington is favored. The reactor would generate electricity and produce its own fuel by converting uranium into plutonium, potentially replacing hydroelectric and depleting oil and gas reserves globally within about 50 years. The Hanford plant’s previous wartime role in plutonium production is noted.
