Marine Stadium Boat Race Tragedy Claims Owner Life
A 35-year-old San Pedro tavern owner, Robert M. La Rue, was killed when his runabout was struck during a 6000 spectator speedboat race at Marine Stadium. Witnesses say three boats turned sharply at about 60 mph, colliding with La Rue’s craft and throwing him into the water where another boat ran over him. Cap Selleck of San Pedro operated the striking boat and told officers loss of control followed a rolling wave. Lifeguards and a doctor treated La Rue, who died at Long Beach Community Hospital. This was the season’s first fatality at the venue, for the Los Angeles Speed Boat Association racing news magazine.
