Senate curtails enlisted stewards for top brass

The Senate voted 73 to 9 to sharply cut enlisted stewards for generals and admirals, reducing aides from 1,245 to 218. Sen. William Proxmire urged the change, noting four-star pay and arguing taxpayers should not fund personal servants. The move limits Joint Chiefs aides to three, with lower ranks receiving none, amid past criticism of racial and ethnic staffing in these roles.
