Fog and cool air tame Northern California timber fires
Ocean fog and cooler air aided firefighters as two large timber fires in Humboldt and Mendocino counties were brought under control. A 13 000 acre Shelter Cove blaze in Humboldt was contained at 3 am after lying down amid rising humidity, while a 7 000 acre Dog House Creek fire in Mendocino was to be contained by late afternoon. Investigators attributed the Dog House Creek blaze to children playing with matches. A 750 acre Petrolia fire in Humboldt was contained early Tuesday. Use of revenue funds to cut taxes rejected
Supervisor Kenneth Hahn proposed using 11 million dollars in revenue-sharing funds to trim the 1973-74 county tax rate by six cents but the plan failed on a second Tuesday. Hahn argued 47 million in unused funds could finance capital projects, while Board chair Pete Schabarum called it an unwise budget move. The projected general fund tax rate remains 3.8651 per 100 dollars, up 16.21 cents from last year.
