Nixon deductions may wipe out federal income tax

President Nixon and his wife reportedly claimed enough deductions in 1970 and possibly 1971 to offset all taxable income from his $200,000 salary plus other earnings. White House figures cite interest on loans, property taxes, charitable deduction for pre presidential papers, and notes on California Florida property purchases as major write offs. Tax Analysts challenged the gift deduction, while the IRS tracked high income zero tax returns, prompting ongoing tax reform debates and the 1969 tax act.
