California Leads in US Traffic Death Toll on Labor Day Weekend

California posted the highest traffic death toll as Labor Day weekend ended, with 54 fatalities by Sunday night, and several new deaths reported across Orange and Los Angeles counties. Anaheim woman Giorta Jean Westin, 23, and husband Terrence, 25, died after their car struck a moving passenger train at the Culver Drive crossing in Irvine. Westin died at the scene. her husband was hospitalized in serious condition. Other victims include Wayne Lee Warvie, 19, of La Mirada, killed in a collision at Norwalk, and Doe R. De Lue, 43, of South Gate, who died from injuries after his motorcycle hit a pole in Trabuco Oaks. The national toll was tracking below the Safety Council’s projections.

Value Village stores profit split among three children's groups

Long Beach Value Village described as tax exempt and charitable directs much of its proceeds to three retarded children groups. Salaries exceed $38,000 for the manager of stores at 2420 Santa Fe Ave Long Beach and 2005 Willowbrook Ave Compton. Net profit from donated items in June was about $20,000 after expenses, distributed among Long Beach Retarded Children's Foundation, the Mid-Cities Association for Retarded Children, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Home of the West.

Fires Contain San Bernardino National Forest Blazes

U S Forest Service officials Monroy said state fire crews aiding two major brush fires in the San Bernardino National Forest expected control by early today. The fires scorched over 2700 acres with Gueé blaze threatening Waterman Canyon near San Bernardino and prompting evacuations of homes and campsites. A second blaze south of Lake Elsinore near the Riverside and Orange County line burned in rugged terrain.

Legalized marijuana urged by national violence panel

A Washington staff report to the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence calls for legalizing marijuana for those over 16. It cites higher violent crime rates among urban blacks, criticizes current laws, and advocates improved ghetto conditions to curb predatory violence.
