About 40 South Vietnamese veterans and a large police and troops force fought in Saigon Thursday to press for improved benefits. Nine wounded, including three Americans, as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces fired on during a daylong standoff.
A federal judge ordered nine Alabama parents to appear in Birmingham to answer charges of attempting to thwart a desegregation plan by taking over classrooms at Munford School and Talladega County High. The group led about 120 parents who created a school within a school and refused to transfer children to new assignments.
Internal Revenue Service questions Rubin linked Social Education Foundation for delinquent income reporting three months late. Rep. William Scherle urges probe and possible revocation of tax exemption. The foundation holds Rubin book rights and bills it as a war manifesto urging youth to reject institutions.
Joan Kennedy, wife of Sen. Kennedy, will make her first public appearance at a Philadelphia fundraiser for the Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania governor. The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Sixteen Concert Soloists will perform, per Dick Shapp, son of Milton Shapp. It is unclear if Kennedy will attend. Separately, Cadet Denham of New Baden, Illinois seeks discharge from military academy on grounds of conscientious objection to war, marking a first in the academy’s history.
Dr. Marlin Sweig, once chief aide to Speaker Toha McCormack, received a two year prison sentence and a $2000 fine after being convicted of perjury before a federal grand jury investigating McCormack’s office. Sweig, a close friend and former employee, earned $96,000 annually when indicted last October. Speaker McCormack declined to comment on the sentence.
Alan Wilson, 27, a member of Canned Heat, was found dead in his sleeping bag Thursday behind a friend’s home in Topanga Canyon. Autopsy pending. A Liberty Records spokesman said sleeping pills were found in his pocket and he had been low in spirits. Wilson, an original member, wrote Going Up the Country and On the Road Again and played rhythm guitar harmonica and sang.
AFL-CIO official C. J. Haggerty warned 17 unions representing about 2.5 million construction workers that labor disruptions could drive employers to nonunion contractors. He said hundreds of millions of dollars of work were lost this year and urged workers to meet contracts and avoid disruptive stoppages.
Shirley Temple Black, deputy chairman of the U N delegation to the human environment conference, said films aren’t what they used to be. She criticized old views of her era and suggested there must be something in between.
A 15 year old from Israel, Taft New York's St Barnabas Hospital, underwent successful brain cryosurgery by an international team including two Egyptians. The patient suffered a dystomy brain disease causing near total incapacity before treatment. Unclear details follow.
