Cargo plane crashes near Guam with 19 aboard

A Military Transport Service C124 crashed into the Pacific about 50 miles west of Guam with 19 people aboard. No survivors found yet. Debris and three bodies spotted by a Naval Air Station amphibian. The plane, based at Travis AFB, was en route to Clarke AFB in the Philippines and vanished shortly after takeoff. The search involved two US helicopters, a navy recon plane, radar picket aircraft, and surface craft.

Lightning Strikes St Louis Trolley Injuring Eight

A streetcar in midtown St Louis was struck by lightning during a night incident. The conductor reported a flash fire and eight people were injured and sent to hospitals. Fire crews contained the blaze as passengers remained aboard the trolley.

Board delays Central High opening amid Supreme Court case

The Little Rock school board postponed the Central High start to Sept. 15 to await the Supreme Court ruling on integration. If required to proceed with integration, the board will address opening status after the court meets on Sept. 11, with Superintendent Virgil Blossom saying they will “cross that bridge when it comes to it.” Separately, San Francisco Police Chief Frank Ahern died of a heart attack in his box during the Dodgers-Giants game. In Alturas California UP I reports that more than 360 firefighters battled a fierce Modoc National Forest fire in sizzling heat. The blaze broke out anew at both ends late afternoon and threatened acreage could not yet be determined amid forecasts for high temperatures low humidity and strong winds.

Missouri Pilot Dies in El Toro Crash

An Air National Guard jet from the 170th Fighter Interceptor Squadron based in Springfield Missouri crashed after takeoff from El Toro Marine Corps Air Station on Monday afternoon. The pilot, Lt. Howard D. Jones, 26, of St Louis Missouri, was killed in the explosion and crash.

Three Die and Forty Five Hurt in Long Beach Area

Three people were killed and 45 injured in weekend holiday traffic crashes in the Long Beach area. National tolls listed include 392 dead nationwide from traffic incidents, 108 by drowning, and 12 in plane crashes, totaling 583. Law enforcement issued thousands of citations while trying to curb accidents. Local fatality: Mrs. Jane M. Ogden, 75, Esperanza Avenue, struck on Ocean Boulevard near Esperanza Avenue Saturday night.

Killer Whale Spurs Beach Attendance and Lifeguard Warnings

Nearly one million people spent Labor Day at Southland beaches as a 40-foot killer whale drew crowds. An estimated 175,000 on local sands and 200,000 along the Redondo Manhattan Hermosa strip. Lifeguards reported eleven stations alerted with several hundred in the water fleeing when a fin appeared off Point Dume. The whale swam from Zuma to Trancas before vanishing, reportedly not attacking.

Seven Men Held In Phantom Sniper Shooting Case

San Pedro detectives arrested Fred Montoya, Robert Martinez, Dowell, Jorge Chavez, Alex Wilen, Cleo Ariza, and Louis Montoya in connection with the phantom sniper attack that left Mrs Barbara Zamarripa critically injured. Police say the seven, described as close friends, were detained without weapons.
